Manage users' access in Sites

This article is for administrators of the new Google Sites (Publish button at the top right). Get administrator help for classic Google Sites.

As an administrator, you can decide if users can create and edit sites in Google Sites.

Before you begin

To create and edit sites, Google Drive must be turned on. Learn how to view which apps are turned on for a user, group, or organizational unit. If needed, turn Drive on for users.  

Set up site creation and editing

Before you begin: If needed, learn how to apply the setting to a department or group.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. In the Admin console, go to Menu and then Appsand thenGoogle Workspaceand thenSites.
  3. Click New Sites.
  4. To apply the setting to everyone, leave the top organizational unit selected. Otherwise, select a child organizational unit or a configuration group.
  5. Click Site creation and editing.
  6. Choose an option:
    • To let users edit and create sites, select Users can edit sitesand thencheck the Allow users to create new sites box.
    • To let users only edit sites, but not create them, select Users can edit sitesand thenuncheck the Allow users to create new sites box.
    • To restrict users from creating or editing sites, select Users cannot edit sites.
  7. Click Save. Or, you might click Override for an organizational unit.

    To later restore the inherited value, click Inherit (or Unset for a group).

  8. (Optional) To specify how users in your organization can share Sites project files, see Set Google Sites sharing options.

Changes can take up to 24 hours but typically happen more quickly. Learn more

If you turn off Sites...

If the Sites service is turned off, it impacts users and files:

  • Users see the Sites menu option in their browser, but they get an error message when they try to access or edit a site project file.
  • Project files aren’t deleted from Drive, but you and your users can’t access them. You need to turn Sites on again to access them.
  • You and your users can't see a published site on another domain, even if the site is set as Anyone on the web can find and view. If you try to access the site, you will get an error message.

If you turn off Drive...

  • Documents and Sites project files remain, but you and your users can’t access or edit them. You need to turn Drive on again to access them.
  • People outside of your organization (including your users who aren't signed in to their Google Workspace account) can still view published sites.
