Invite people to join your team

Team administrators can use the dashboard to invite people to join a team.

Before you begin

  • If you have a paid subscription, make sure you understand how billing works. If you have Essentials, review how billing works for active users or for Enterprise Essentials and Enterprise Essentials Plus, review your billing plan.
  • Essentials Starter only: If team members are required to sign in with their Microsoft account, invited users need a Microsoft 365 account to accept your invitation. Learn more about managing single sign-on (SSO) with Microsoft accounts.
  • If your team uses Gemini for Google Workspace, only an admin can invite people to join the team.

Make it easier for others to join your team

This feature is available only with the Essentials Starter edition.

As an administrator, you can let people on your team invite others to join.

  1. Open Drive and at the bottom, click Team dashboard.
  2. On the side, click Permissions.
  3. Choose an option:
    • Allow team discovery—Whenever someone from your company signs up for an Essentials edition, they can find teams and have the option to join. Finding and joining discoverable teams will be available in the coming months.
    • Allow members to invite others to join—Anyone on your team can send invitations to others from your domain (such as your-company.com).

Monitor invites and new members

Only people from your domain (such as your-company.com) can join your team. To view any pending invitations and new team members, click People on your Team dashboard.

How team members can invite others

Team members can invite people to join a team in the following ways:

  • Share a file. For example, if a team member shares a file from Google Drive or a Google Workspace editor (such as Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides), they can invite the collaborator to join the team.
  • Send the team’s unique link. After users click the link, they can join the team. To find your team’s link, go to Send an invitation later on this page.

Send an invitation

  1. Open Drive and at the bottom, click Team dashboard.
  2. If you want to share a link to the team, click Copy invite link and share the link with anyone that you want to add to your team.
  3. If you want to send an email invitation, click Invite people, enter the email addresses, and click Send invitation.The people that you invite need to accept the invitation and have an Essentials edition to join your team.

If you have a paid Essentials subscription, you won't be billed for invited team members until they complete the sign-up process and join your team.

Cancel an invitation

  1. Open Drive and at the bottom, click Team dashboard.
  2. On the side, click People and scroll to the person.
  3. Click More Moreand thenCancel invite.
  4. Click Cancel invitation to confirm.
