Troubleshoot Project Activate

If you're having trouble with Project Activate, use these troubleshooting steps.

My device won't detect my expression or gesture

Make sure that you're in a room with good lighting

Project Activate's computer-vision models may have a hard time detecting gestures in dim lighting. If you use Project Activate at night, leave a light on so that the camera can recognise your face and gestures.

Lower the Gesture sensitivity setting

  1. At the top right-hand side, tap Settings.
  2. On the right of an expression, tap Edit .
  3. Tap the Gesture sensitivity drop-down menu and select a sensitivity.
  4. To find the best value for you, tap Test settings.

Check phone placement

Gesture detection requires that your face is in view of the camera. Gaze gestures work best when the phone is mounted in front of you, just below eye level.

I get unintended detection of facial expressions and eye movements

Experiment with the test settings to find the right fit

  1. At the top right-hand side, tap Settings.
  2. On the right of an expression, tap Edit .
  3. Under 'Ignore gestures', increase the 'Shorter than' value from 1.0 s to a higher value.
  4. Find a value that lowers the chance of unintended gestures, but doesn't make it too difficult for the app to detect them.

The 'Raise eyebrows' expression can't detect my eyebrow movements

The detection for eyebrows is blocked if your mouth is open. The 'Raise eyebrows' detector in Project Activate is programmed to cancel the detection if it senses that your mouth is open. Make sure that you keep your mouth closed when you use the 'Raise eyebrows' expression.
