Accessibility on the YouTube Kids mobile app

The YouTube Kids app works with the iOS accessibility feature that gives VoiceOver support for blind and low-vision users.

Getting started

To turn on accessibility features in iOS, select Settings then Accessibility, and switch VoiceOver to on.

Explore the app

Once you've opened the app, you can use two fingers to scroll from right to left to view family-friendly videos, channels and playlists. Double-tap on any thumbnail to view the video or to explore the channel or playlist. To go back, double-tap the 'back' button.

Search for videos

Search for videos:

  1. Double-tap on the 'search' button.
  2. Add your search terms to the 'text field'.

To use voice search, double-tap the 'voice search' button and speak your search terms.

Play videos

Once you've found a video to play, double-tap to begin playback; the video will automatically go into full-screen mode. Double-tap again to minimise a video during playback.

  • Skip ad: Double-tap the 'skip ad' button to skip the ad before your video.
  • Pause: Double-tap the 'pause' button to pause the video.
  • Next video: Double-tap the 'next video' button to play the next related video.

Below the video, find related videos that you can play once your video is finished.

Auto-play videos

When auto-play is turned on, another related video will automatically play once your video is finished. This setting is turned off by default.

To turn on auto-play:

  1. Go to the watch page of any video in YouTube Kids.
  2. Double-tap the 'more actions' button to navigate to the video options menu.
  3. Double-tap the 'Auto-play' button to turn on auto-play. Double-tap the 'Auto-play' button again if you want to turn auto-play off.
Set a timer

Set a timer:

  1. Double-tap the 'parental control' button. You will find it in the bottom-right corner of any page.
  2. In the 'Parents only' menu that opens, enter the requested numbers, then tap the 'SUBMIT' button.
  3. Double-tap the 'Timer' button.
  4. Double-tap the 'decrease by one minute' button or 'increase by one minute' button to set a time limit.
  5. Double-tap the 'Start timer' button.
Send feedback

Send feedback about the app:

  1. Double-tap the 'parental control' button.
  2. In the 'Parents only' menu that opens, enter the requested numbers, then tap the 'SUBMIT' button.
  3. Double-tap the 'Feedback' button.
  4. Double-tap either 'HAPPY' or 'UNHAPPY'.
  5. Double-tap the 'FEEDBACK' button, then enter your feedback.
  6. Double-tap 'Screenshot' to include one in your feedback.
  7. Double-tap the 'send' button.
Report inappropriate videos

Report an inappropriate video:

  1. Go to the video that you'd like to report.
  2. Double-tap the 'more actions' button.
  3. Double-tap the 'REPORT' button.
  4. Double-tap the 'Inappropriate audio' button, the 'Inappropriate visuals' button or the 'Other' button.
  5. Double-tap 'REPORT'.
Clear watch and search history

Clear your watch and search history and remove the videos from Recommended and Watch it again:

  1. Double-tap the 'parental control' button.
  2. In the 'Parents only' menu that opens, enter the requested numbers, then tap the 'SUBMIT' button.
  3. Double-tap the 'settings' button.
  4. Double-tap the profile icon for the child whose settings you'd like to update.
  5. Double-tap 'CLEAR HISTORY'.
  6. Double-tap the 'OK' button.
Audio settings

Turn off the audio that plays within the app:

  1. In the top-left corner of your screen, double-tap your child's profile icon.
  2. Double-tap the 'EDIT' button to change settings for the selected profile.
  3. Double-tap the 'settings' button.
  4. Double-tap 'App music' and 'Sound effects' to turn these features on and off.
Search settings

To turn off Search:

  1. Double-tap the 'parental control' button.
  2. In the 'Parents only' menu that opens, enter the requested numbers, then tap the 'SUBMIT' button.
  3. Double-tap the 'settings' button.
  4. Double-tap the profile icon for the child whose settings you'd like to change.
  5. Double-tap the 'Allow searching' switch.
Pause watch and search history

Pausing your watch and search history will stop new video views and new search terms from influencing recommended content. To pause watch and search history:

  1. Double-tap the 'parental control' button.
  2. In the 'Parents only' menu that opens, enter the requested numbers, then tap the 'SUBMIT' button.
  3. Double-tap the 'settings' button.
  4. Double-tap the profile icon for the child whose settings you'd like to change.
  5. Double-tap the 'Pause watch history' and 'Pause search history' switches.
