If you run experiments, you can now use auto-pause as a safeguard to limit cost and risk. Auto-pause checks on your experiment results once a day and automatically pauses underperforming experiments based on conditions you set. Experiments have to run for one full day before auto-pause considers pausing them.
By default, auto-pause is on for all new experiments, but you can turn it off or change the conditions. The default condition pauses an experiment if cumulative revenue of the variation group falls by 5% relative to the control group. You can set up to 10 auto-pause conditions.
You can set the thresholds that activate auto-pause on experiments. Thresholds are based on confidence intervals of 95%. For example, if a threshold is a 10% drop in revenue, but the data indicates a 10% drop with a +/- 5% margin of error, the experiment will not pause. This is because the 10% threshold is within the 5-15% band. For the experiment to automatically pause, performance would have to decline to a 16% drop with a +/- 5% margin of error because the 10% threshold will be outside the 11-16% band. Experiments will only pause when the lower bound of the confidence interval meets the necessary threshold.
Set auto-pause for an experiment
By default, auto-pause is on for each experiment. You can add up to 10 auto-pause conditions to an experiment.
- Sign in to Google Ad Manager.
- Create an experiment.
For instructions, go to Run an experiment from an opportunity or Run a manual experiment. - Under Auto-pause experiments, set the conditions to pause the experiment.
- To add another condition, click Add auto-pause condition and make your selections.
- To remove a condition, next to the condition, click .
Update auto-pause settings on an active experiment
After an experiment starts, you can change auto-pause settings.
- Sign in to Google Ad Manager.
- Under "Optimization", click Experiments.
- Click an active experiment to view the experiment results card.
- Choose an option:
- To restart a paused experiment, under "Status", click Pause select Resume.
- To turn off auto-pause for the experiment, under "Settings", click Edit disable the switch .
- To change an auto-pause condition, under "Settings", click Edit enter your changes.
- To add an auto-pause condition, under "Settings", click Edit Add auto-pause condition enter your changes.
- Click Save.
