Set data collection and interest-based ads control for Google demand

With the data collection and interest-based ads control, you can manage how Google (Google Ads, Display & Video 360) may use data to serve personalized interest-based ads.

When the control is turned on, Google can use data to serve interest-based ads, as well as build and update user profiles for these interest-based ads.

Note: This control also applies to demographic and interest-based targeting set by the buyer, such as affinity lists.

How it works

When you allow data collection and interest-based ads, Google demand (Google Ads, Display & Video 360) can:

  • collect user activities on your sites through ad requests, clicks, and conversions.
  • build user profiles and then serve interest-based ads.

When you don't allow data collection and interest-based ads, Google demand (Google Ads, Display & Video 360) is not allowed to build user profiles based on data from ad-related traffic on your sites, and Google won’t use existing profiles to serve interest-based ads.

Note: For Google demand to use user profiles for interest-based ads, publishers must contribute data to the creation of these cross-site user profiles. To represent this, this control allows publishers to opt in to both contributing data and using existing profiles to serve interest-based ads, or to opt out of both contributing data to user profiles and using them for interest-based ads.

Update your data collection and interest-based ads setting

By default, the data collection and interest-based ads setting is allowed for Google demand. To change the setting:

  1. Sign in to Google Ad Manager.
  2. Click Delivery, then Demand channel settings.
  3. Under "Data usage and personalization," click Data collection and interest based ads, and choose an option:
    • To allow data collection and interest-based ads for the bidding ad source, click the switch on On . This setting is the default.
    • To not allow data collection and interest-based ads for the bidding ad source, click the switch off off disable.
  4. Click Save.

What happens when you turn off data collection?

  • For Google demand, this control additionally prohibits Google from creating or updating user profiles, and from using existing profiles to serve interest-based ads.
  • The number of ads competing to appear on your inventory might decrease, which may decrease your potential earnings.
