About ad unit deployment (Beta)

Note: This feature is currently in beta release to a limited group of publishers.

To help publishers comply with the new consent management platform requirements by January 16, 2024,  the latest Google Mobile Ads (GMA) SDK introduces ad unit deployment. Ad unit deployment allows European regulations messages to show in interstitial or app open ad units without needing to install the Google User Messaging (UMP) SDK to use Google’s CMP.

If you decide to continue using Google’s CMP, we strongly recommend adding the UMP SDK in your app to display your European regulations message. However, ad unit deployment can serve as an intermediate solution.

To use ad unit deployment, you must first install the latest version of the GMA SDK (Version 22.5.0+ for Android or Version 10.8.0+ for iOS).

In your AdMob account, you’ll be asked to indicate if you plan to create a European regulations message using a Google-certified CMP.  If you choose to create a European regulations message but don't publish it by January 16, 2024, we’ll use ad unit deployment to publish a default European regulations message on your behalf. This message will show in your existing interstitial or app open ad units, when possible. You can customize this European regulations message later.

Note the following considerations when using ad unit deployment:

  • Ad unit deployment works best for publishers that use AdMob as their mediation platform.
  • You are responsible for adding a consent revocation link to your app.
  • Logos are not available on apps using ad unit deployment. To show a logo on your consent message, you must install the UMP SDK and customize your message.
  • You must install the UMP SDK to show messages everywhere. Otherwise, messages will only be shown in GDPR regions (EEA and UK).
  • If you make changes to your ad partners while using ad unit deployment, only new users will be asked to consent. You won't have the opportunity to show the consent message again for returning users.

Ad unit deployment is an intermediate solution to help you meet the requirement deadline. If you decide to use Google’s CMP, we strongly recommend adding the UMP SDK to your app. You can switch to another Google-certified CMP at any time.

European regulations messaging metrics will not be available with ad unit deployment. Instead, implement European regulations messaging in your apps using the UMP SDK for detailed reporting support.

You can turn on ad unit deployment for each app when you create a European regulations message after January 16, 2024. To turn on ad unit deployment for an existing European regulations message:

  1. Sign in to your AdMob account at https://admob.google.com.
  2. Click Privacy & messaging.
  3. Click Manage on one of the message type cards on the Privacy & messaging page.
  4. In the Messages table, click any app link in the Apps column.
  5. Click the toggle to turn on Ad unit deployment for your apps.
