[UA] Incorrect Attribution of Entrance Page [Legacy]

You are viewing a legacy article about Universal Analytics. Learn more about Google Analytics 4 replacing Universal Analytics.

The Funnel Visualization report can appear to wrongly attribute an entrance page to Step 1 of a funnel when the user actually entered the funnel at a different step. For example:

Your goal and funnel steps are as follows:

  • Step 1: /page1.html
  • Step 2: /page2.html
  • Goal URL: /goal.html

The user browses pages on your site in the following order:

  1. /entrance.html
  2. /page2.html
  3. /page1.html
  4. /goal.html

Analytics attributes the entrance page to the earliest step in the funnel that the user viewed. If, as in this example, the user viewed /page2.html before viewing /page1.html, the entrance page is attributed to /page1.html because it is the earliest step in the funnel.
