Segments and filters let you restrict the data shown in the visualization according to certain selection criteria. Filters just apply to the current visualization. Segments, on the other hand, can be imported from and exported to Analytics, so you can use them in other reports and explorations. You can share segments with other people, as well, whereas filters can't be shared.
Audiences are lists of cookies or mobile-advertising IDs that represents a group of users you want to re-engage because of their likelihood to convert. You can easily define a group of users via segments and/or filter, then build an audience for use in other areas of Analytics.

Create filters
- Drag dimensions and metrics from the Variables panel to the Filter control in Tab Settings. Alternatively, click the Filter control and select the field from the popup list.
- Select a filter condition from the list. Your choices vary depending on the type of field (dimension or metric) you're filtering on.
- Type a condition to complete the filter criteria.
You can add up to 10 filters to the Tab Settings. Multiple filters are ANDed together (all conditions must match).
Apply segments
Drag segments from the Variables panel to the Segment control in Tab Settings. Alternatively, click the Segment control and select the segment from the popup list.
You can add multiple segments to the Tab Settings. To visualize how multiple segments relate to each other, use the Segment Overlap technique.
Import segments
You can import up to 10 existing segments from Analytics:
- In the Segments section of the Variables panel, click .
- Select the segments you'd like to use in your exploration.
- Click IMPORT.
Create new segments or audiences from your data
If your exploration shows an interesting data point, you can save that as a segment or audience:
- Right-click on the data on the canvas.
- In the popup menu, click Create segment from users or Build audience from users.
- If desired, edit the segment name, then click SAVE.
- Your new segment appears in the Variables panel for this exploration.
- If you elected to build an audience, you'll be taken to the audience definition tool in Analytics.
Publish segments
You can export any segments in the exploration so they can be used elsewhere in Analytics:
- In the Segments section of the Variables panel, click .
- Click Publish.
- Select the segments you want to publish.
- Decide how these segments will be accessible:
- I can edit/apply segment in any view - only you can access the segment(s) in any view in any account to which you have access.
- I can edit/apply segment in this view - only you can access the segment(s) in only the currently selected view.
- Collaborators can apply/edit segment in this view - anyone with access to the currently selected view can access the segment(s).
- Click PUBLISH.
View users
The User Exploration report lets you isolate and examine individual rather than aggregate user behavior. To use this report to view the users that make up the data points in your explorations:
- Right-click on the data on the canvas.
- In the popup menu, click View users.
- The User Exploration report appears, populated with the users that contributed to that data point.
