How Google Play services can use your physical activity information

Google Play services may periodically access your device’s physical activity information to provide core services on your device. Some examples are:

To keep your device unlocked when it’s on your body

When you opt in, Google Play services lets you keep your device unlocked when it is on your body via the Smart Lock feature. 

Tip: To manage this, go to Settings and then Security and then Smart Lock and then On-body detection.

To reduce distractions while you drive

When you opt in, Google Play services can detect when you drive your vehicle, and it can put your device in Do Not Disturb mode to silence any notifications you receive while you drive.

Tip: To manage notifications when you drive, go to Settings and then Google and then Personal Safety and then Driving mode.

To enable fitness related services like step counts

When you use the Google Fit app or share fitness data by connecting another app to Google Fit, your fitness data is tied to your Google account and you can share it with other apps. Google Play services can access your physical activity information on your phone to support fitness tracking with Google Fit. For example, Google Play services allows apps with the physical activity permission to get fitness-related activity information like step counts. Learn how to view and manage your fitness data.

Tips:

  • To disable connected app or device access to Google Fit, on your device, go to Settings and then Google and then Settings for Google apps and then Google Fit and then Connected Apps & Devices.
  • To manage or delete your Google Fit data, go to Settings and then Google and then Settings for Google Apps and then Google Fit and then Manage data.

To provide physical activity information to other apps

Google Play services helps to provide physical activity information from sensors on your device to other apps with the physical activity permission. Because Google Play services provides the system service for all apps and services to access your physical activity information on your device, you can't turn off the physical activity permission for Google Play services. 

Tip: To find and manage other apps that have access to physical activity information, on your device, go to Settings and then Privacy and then Permissions manager and then Physical activity.

How Google handles your information

In order to enable some features, Google Play Services may collect and send some information to Google which may include crash logs and diagnostics information for analytics purposes. Any information that Google collects is handled in accordance with Google's Privacy Policy.
