Fix an “Auth check failure on device(s)” error

If you get an “Auth check failure on device(s)” error when you try to add a shared Google Assistant-enabled device, you’re not a member of the home that the device is linked to in the Google Home app.

Join the home linked to the device

Important: You can’t use the steps below to join a home with your Google Workspace account Learn how to use a Google Workspace account on a device.

Step 1: Ask a member of the home to invite you

To join a home, ask a member of the home in the Google Home app to invite you.

To link a child’s account that’s managed in Family Link to a device, the parent in the child’s Google family group who’s trying to link their child’s account must join the home.

Step 2: (For Home members) Invite a member to your home

Important:

As a home member, you can invite people to your home. A home can have up to 6 members.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Switch to the home you want to share.
  3. Tap Settings   tap Add Add and then Home member.
  4. Enter the name or email address of the person you want to invite to your home and then tap Next.
  5. Review what’s shared when you add someone to your home and then tap Next.
  6. Review the person’s access to your home and then tap Send.
  7. If your Google Family Group isn’t full and the person you’re inviting isn’t already in one, you should get the option to invite them to your Google Family Group.
    • To invite them, tap Add to Family.
    • To skip this step, tap No Thanks.
    • Note: You can have up to 6 members in a Google Family Group.

The person you invite should receive an email with instructions.

Step 3: Accept the home member invitation
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap the inbox   tap your pending invitation.
  3. Follow the in-app instructions to join someone’s home.
    • To accept, tap Next.
    • To reject, tap Decline.
  4. Review what’s shared when you join a home and then tap Agree.
  5. Create a nickname for the home. This nickname only appears to you.
  6. The next time you connect to the home’s Wi-Fi, open the Home app Google Home to finish Google Assistant setup, which adds you to the devices connected to the same Wi-Fi.

Step 4: For a child’s account managed with Family Link only

To add a child’s account that’s managed in Family Link to a speaker or Smart Display, you must meet both of these requirements:

  • Be a parent in the child’s Google family group.
  • Be a member of the home the device is linked to in the Home app.

If you’re the parent in a Google family group and you want to link your child’s account that’s managed in Family Link to a speaker or Smart Display, you can do that after you’ve joined the home. Learn how to add your child’s account to a device.
