Play audio on your Google Assistant device with Bluetooth

You can use Bluetooth to play music or other audio that's on your mobile device or computer through your speaker, Smart Display, Smart Clock, or Pixel Tablet.

Important: This feature may not work on some speakers that have Google Assistant.

Play music & videos on your TV or speakers

You can ask your Google Assistant to cast music, movies, and radio to your smart TV or speakers.

Important: The languages you can use depend on the device. Learn which languages work on your device.

Pair your device

Use your voice

Say "Hey Google, Bluetooth pairing." Your Assistant-enabled device enters pairing mode.

After you enter pairing mode, open the Bluetooth settings on your mobile device or computer and connect your Assistant-enabled device.

Use the Google Home app
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Home app Google Home.
  2. At the bottom, tap Home Home.
  3. Touch and hold your device.
  4. At the top right, tap Device settings Settings and then Audio and then Paired Bluetooth devices.
  5. Tap Enable pairing mode.

After you enter pairing mode, open the Bluetooth settings on your mobile device or computer and connect to your Assistant-enabled device.

Use your voice

To check if your device is paired, say "Hey Google" then say a question, like:

  • "Is Bluetooth active?"
  • "Is Bluetooth paired?"
  • "Is Bluetooth connected?"

Use the Google Home app

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Home app Google Home.
  2. At the bottom, tap Home Home.
  3. Touch and hold your device.
  4. At the top right, tap Device settings Settings and then Audio and then Paired Bluetooth devices.
  5. Check the paired devices and the date they were paired.
Unpair an Assistant-enabled smart device

Use your voice

To unpair devices, say "Hey Google" then say a command, like:

  • "Unpair devices."
  • "Clear all paired Bluetooth devices."
  • "Clear all paired devices."
  • "Clear all Bluetooth devices."

Use the Google Home app

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Home app Google Home.
  2. At the bottom, tap Home Home.
  3. Touch and hold your device.
  4. At the top right, tap Device settings Settings and then Audio and then Paired Bluetooth devices.
  5. Next to the device you want to unpair, tap Remove Remove and then Unpair.

Step 1: Connect a TV or speaker to your Assistant

After you connect a TV or speaker, you can ask your Assistant to control that device.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Assistant app Assistant.
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile image or initial and then Services and then TVs and speakers.
  3. From here, you can add one device, or multiple devices:
    • Add a device: Tap the plus sign in the bottom right.
    • Add multiple devices: Tap the box next to each device's name and then Add.

Step 2: Link music & video apps

Select apps you want to play music and videos from. For example, you can choose Spotify for music or Netflix for videos.

Link a music app
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Assistant app Assistant.
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile image or initial and then Services and then Music.
  3. Choose a music service. For some services, you'll be asked to sign in to your account.
Link a video app
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Assistant app Assistant.
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile image or initial and then Services and then Photos & videos.
  3. On the app you want to connect, tap Link and then Link account.
  4. Follow the steps to sign in.

Step 3: Play music & videos using commands

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Assistant app Assistant.
  2. Say or type a command:
Music commands

To play, you can say:

  • “Play [song name] on [speaker].”
  • “Play [artist name] on [speaker].”
  • “Play [album name] on [speaker].”
  • “Play [song name] by [artist name] on [speaker].”

Tip: These commands open your default music app. To use another app, add its name to the command, for example: "Play [artist name] on [Spotify] on [speaker]."

To control what’s playing, you can say:

  • “Pause.”
  • “Stop.”
  • “Resume.”

Video commands

To play, you can say:

  • “Play [movie name] on [TV].”
  • “Watch [TV show name] on [TV].”
  • “Watch [movie name] on [Netflix] on [TV].”

To control what’s playing, you can say:

  • Next or previous: “Next episode.” “Previous episode.”
  • Pause or resume: “Pause.” “Stop.” “Resume.”
  • Rewind: “Skip back [X] seconds or minutes.” “Rewind [X] seconds or minutes.”
  • Fast forward: “Go forward [X] seconds or minutes.”
  • Volume: “Turn it up.” “Turn it down.” “Volume 5.”

Use subtitles or change the language

Languages you can use depend on the video service and show. You can say:

  • Subtitles:
    • “Turn on/off subtitles.”
    • “Turn on/off captions.”
    • “Captions on/off.”
    • “Turn on/off Spanish subtitles.”
  • Spoken language:
    • “Turn on/off dubbing.”
    • “Dubbing on/off.”
    • “Play it in German.”
    • “Change language to German.”
Radio commands

To play, you can say:

  • “Play [station name] on [speaker].”
  • “Play [frequency] on [speaker].”
  • “Play [call sign] on [speaker].”

To control what’s playing, you can say:

  • “Pause.”
  • “Stop.”
  • “Resume.”

Disconnect a TV, speaker, or app

Disconnect a TV or speaker

If you don’t want your Google Assistant to control a TV or speaker:

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Assistant app Assistant.
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile image or initial and then Services and then TVs and speakers.
  3. Touch and hold the device you want to disconnect, tap Unlink.
Change or disconnect a music app
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Assistant app Assistant.
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile image or initial and then Services and then Music.
  3. From here, you can:
    • Choose another app.
    • Disconnect a service: Tap Unlink.
Change or disconnect a video app
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Assistant app Assistant.
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile image or initial and then Services and then Photos & videos.
  3. From here, you can:
    • Disconnect an app: Tap Unlink and then Unlink account.
    • Choose another app: Tap Link and then Link account. Follow the steps to sign in.

Play music & videos on your Google Assistant device

You can ask your Google Assistant to cast music, videos, and radio to your Smart TV or Smart Display. You can also cast music and radio to your speaker or Smart Clock.

For example, you can say:

  • "Hey Google, play [song name] on my bedroom speaker."
  • "Hey Google, play [TV show] on my kitchen TV."
