Add or remove someone in a direct message

To add someone to a direct message (DM) with two or more people in Google Chat, add them to the member list or mention them in the message.

Add people to a DM

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chat app or Gmail app .
    • In Gmail: At the bottom, tap Chat .
  2. In the bottom navigation menu, tap Direct messages .
  3. Open a DM.
  4. At the top, tap the conversation name.
  5. Tap Manage members.
  6. Tap Add people .
  7. Enter a name or email address and then tap Done.

Tips:

  • To convert a DM with one person into a group DM, at the top, tap the conversation name and then Start a new chat.
  • To quickly add a new person to a DM with two or more people, in the reply area, enter @ followed by the person’s name.

Remove people from a DM

Important: When you remove someone from a DM, they can't:

  • Participate in the conversation.
  • Check message history.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chat app or Gmail app .
    • In Gmail: At the bottom, tap Chat .
  2. In the bottom navigation menu, tap Direct messages .
  3. Open a DM.
  4. At the top, tap the conversation name.
  5. Tap Manage members.
  6. Next to the person’s name, tap More options  and then Remove from chat.
