Use Google Chat to message and collaborate with anybody you work with. You can use Chat to:
- Talk to people directly or in small group messages.
- Collaborate in large, named groups called spaces.
- Send and share files from Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets.
- Set up tasks and meetings.
- Add apps to enhance your productivity.
Use Chat in Gmail
You can use Chat directly in Gmail on desktop and in the Gmail app for Android and iOS.
If you don’t find Chat in Gmail, you may need to turn it on in Gmail settings. Use Chat in Gmail.
Access Chat from the web
To message people from the web, open Chat in your browser.

Download & install Chat
To message people from your mobile device, download the Chat app for Android and iOS.
Sign in to Google Chat
Important: To use Chat, you need a Google Account. Learn how to create a Google Account.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chat app .

- If prompted, sign in.
Tip: Chat displays the name and profile photo from your Google Account. Learn how to change personal info in your Google Account.
Use Chat at work or school
If you have a work or school account that’s part of Google Workspace, you can use Chat to communicate in large spaces, small groups, or with another person.
Before you use Chat, your organization needs to set up Chat. If you don’t see Chat, reach out to your administrator. Learn how to find your administrator.
