Use Screencast on the web

This page is for users. If you are an administrator and want to learn more, see Screencast.

Using the web-based player for screencasts, you can watch recordings shared with you on any device with a compatible web browser.

You can only create screencast videos on ChromeOS devices using the Screencast app. For more details, see Use Screencast to record and share on your ChromeOS devices.

The Screencast web app currently supports:

  • Chrome browser, including Android and iOS tablets
  • Safari, including iOS tablets
  • Firefox
  • Edge

Note: The Screencast web player does not currently support Internet Explorer or mobile browser such as those found on phones.

Before you begin

Make sure your browser has the following enabled:

  • JavaScript
  • Pop-ups
  • Cookies

You must sign in to view screencast recordings. If you can't view a screencast, you might not have access to the recording.

View a screencast

You can use the Screencast web player to view streaming videos created within the Screencast ChromeOS app. When a screencast is created and shared, a link is generated that you can open in either the ChromeOS app or in a web browser on non-ChromeOS platforms.

To view a screencast recording, open the shared link in a supported browser.

Web app troubleshooting

Enable JavaScript

The Screencast web player needs JavaScript to render properly. If you try to load it without JavaScript, the app automatically redirects you to this help center article. If you have disabled JavaScript in your web browser, update your preferences to allow the Screencast web player to fully render. For details, see Activate JavaScript in your Chrome browser.

Unsupported browsers

Currently the Screencast web player does not support Internet Explorer or any mobile browsers. If you open a screencast link in a mobile browser, you will see an error message asking you to switch to a supported browser. See above for the list of supported browsers.

Pop-ups blocked

You must be signed into the account that the recordings were shared with. The Google sign-In flow uses pop-ups and you must enable them for the Screencast web player to function. If you have disabled pop-ups in your browser, you will see an error message asking you to enable them to continue using the app. For details on how to enable pop-ups, see Block or allow pop-ups in Chrome.

Could not stream video

If you see an error message that your video could not be streamed, check that your browser allows third-party cookies. The Screencast web player requires cookies to be enabled for users to sign in. If your browser disables these cookies, you will see an error when you stream any video. To learn how to enable third-party cookies, see Clear, allow & manage cookies in Chrome.

Account permission issues

If you see an error message asking you to Sign in to continue with Screencast, your account might not have the required Screencast permissions. To fix this, when you select Sign in on the error message, make sure to select the See and download all your Google Drive Files permission box during the authentication process.
