You can use the Diagnostics app to check for hardware and connection problems on your Chromebook, like issues with the battery, CPU, memory or Wi-Fi.
Open Diagnostics
Important: Diagnostics is only available on Chrome OS devices that have version 90 and up. Learn how to update your Chromebook's operating system.
- At the bottom right, select the time Settings .
- Select About ChromeOS Diagnostics.

Here you can find information about the state of your battery, like its health, cycle count, and electrical current.
Learn about the discharge test
This test measures the rate of charge and discharge over a fixed period of time for your Chromebook.
- If the rate of charge and discharge is very low, there may be a problem with the battery or charging port.
- You can troubleshoot more battery and charging issues. If you still run into trouble, contact your Chromebook manufacturer.
Here you will find information about the state of your internet connection. The app can help you find problems across Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and cellular connections. When you open the app, it will automatically run tests for your default connection method.
Tip: To learn about your IP information, select IP Configuration . To save a text file of your results, select Save test details .
Troubleshoot connection problems
- If the app finds a DNS (Domain Name System) error, try these steps.
- For other Wi-Fi, cellular, or Ethernet connection problems, use these steps.
- If you still are having issues, save a text file of your results and contact your Chromebook manufacturer.
Important: CPU tests can stress the device and make regular use difficult. Your device may run slowly and tests may take a long time to run.
CPU tests help you find information about your CPU consumption, current usage, temperature, and speed.
Use the CPU graph
The CPU graph is a chart that monitors the CPU usage of your Chromebook. This can help troubleshoot performance issues and identify which applications use the most CPU resources.
Learn about CPU tests
- The stress test mimics high-load situations that are CPU-intensive.
- The cache test measures cache coherency.
- The floating point accuracy test repeatedly performs floating point operations against preset values to check for accuracy.
- The prime search test checks your CPU calculation of complex prime numbers.
Tip: If your Chromebook fails any of these tests, it may indicate CPU failure or improper device cooling. For more help, contact your Chromebook manufacturer.
The memory test measures system memory.
- If your test fails this could indicate faulty memory. For more help, contact your Chromebook manufacturer.
- On your computer, open Settings .
- In the search bar, enter
diagnostics
. - From the dropdown, select Diagnostics Input The internal keyboard.
- Select Test.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Tips:
- Be sure to stay in the same window while you test. If you leave the window, you’ll receive a message that says, "Keys aren’t tested when you’re using another window." The test can’t continue until you return.
