Eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 will have the option to receive extended updates for a total of 10 years of automatic updates from the platform’s release. To maintain security, performance and stability, extended updates do not include support for Android apps or the Google Play Store. Because extended updates carry this change in features, you’ll need to opt-in to receive them.
Identifying devices eligible for extended updates
For most Chromebooks, updates are automatic throughout their supported lifetime. For some Chromebook models, you must opt in to receive extended updates during the final years of support. These systems are denoted with a * next to the support date.
To find device specific support dates and details, go to Auto Update policy Help Center.
What’s included in extended updates
Extended updates include continued support for security, performance, and stability for your Chromebook. These updates range from keeping you secure on the web to continued device stability improvements. You’ll have the option to opt-in at any time once extended updates are available. After you’ve opted in to receive extended updates, this process won't be reversible.
Devices that receive extended updates will no longer have the ability to run Android apps. Android apps and the Google Play Store will be removed to maintain security, performance, and stability on your ChromeOS device.
After you opt-in, the following will occur:
- All Android-related data will be erased from your device.
- You'll lose all on-device Android apps and app-related data.
- You’ll lose access to the Google Play Store from your ChromeOS device.
- Google Play Store subscriptions must be managed through the web.
- Better Together features such as Nearby Share and Smart Unlock between Chromebook and Android smartphones will continue to function.
Tip: Apps and data on your other ChromeOS and Android devices won’t be affected.
If you don't opt-in, automatic updates won't continue. Android apps and Google Play Store will remain on your device, but app developers may choose not to support these devices over time.
If you're an IT Admin of an organization, check for latest info about opting in to receive extended updates for managed devices in Enterprise and Education Help Center.
