Get started with Help me read & Help me write on Chromebooks

When you read, write, or refine existing text with Help me read or Help me write, you can:

  • For Help me read:
    • Summarize a page
    • Ask questions about a page
  • For Help me write:
    • Write thank you notes and social media posts
    • Rephrase your text to be more fluent and concise
    • Change length and tone
    • Get writing suggestions
    • Create a draft
    • Rewrite existing text

Requirements

To use this feature, make sure that you're:

  • Located in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, or United States.
  • At least 18 years old.
  • Using it on an English page with less than or equal to 400 characters.
  • Signed in to your Google Account.

Tip: Currently, this feature is only available in these languages:

Turn on Help me read & Help me write

Turn on Help me Read

Important: To use Help me read, you must have a Chromebook Plus.

If you received a notification about Help me read:

  1. Right-click on a page of text.
    • You'll get a “Use Google AI to get help reading and writing” notification.
  2. Select Try it.
    • If you don’t want to use Help me read, select No thanks.
  3. When you get the reminder, select Got it.

If you declined the original Help me read notification but would like to try it:

  1. On your Chromebook, at the bottom right, select the time.
  2. Select Settings .
  3. From the left-hand menu, select System preferences.
  4. Under “Search and Assistant,” turn on Help me read.
Tip: Currently, Generative AI is experimental, in early development, and has limited availability.
Turn on Help me write

Important: To use Help me write, you must have a Chromebook Plus.

If you received a notification about Help me write:

  1. Right-click on the text box.
    • You'll get a “Write faster and with more confidence” notification.
  2. Select Try it.
    • If you don’t want to use Help me write, select No thanks.
  3. When you get the reminder, select Got it.

If you declined the original Help me write notification but would like to try it:

  1. On your Chromebook, at the bottom right, select the time.
  2. Select Settings .
  3. From the left-hand menu, select System preferences.
  4. Under “Search and Assistant,” turn on Help me write.

Get reading & writing suggestions

Summarize with Help me read

To summarize a page:

  1. On a page of text, right-click.
    • Make sure you do not select any text.
  2. In the “Help me read” card, select Summarize.

To ask questions about the content: In the "Ask a question" text box, type your question.

  • Help me read can’t answer any questions that aren't covered in the page.

Tips:

  • To rate the writing summary or Q&A, in the “Help me read” box, select Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down.
  • If the summary didn’t meet your needs, you can provide your feedback when you select Thumbs Down.
Get writing suggestions with Help me write

To create a draft:

  1. In a text box, right-click.
    • Make sure you don’t select any text.
  2. In the “Help me write” card, enter a prompt.
    • The prompt is the instruction to the Help me write tool about what to write for you.
  3. Select the arrow button or, on your keyboard, press Enter.
  4. Select from the generated writing suggestions.
    • You can also further refine a suggestion to shorten, elaborate, add emojis, make it sound more formal, or rephrase it.
  5. Select Insert.

To rewrite existing text:

  1. In a text box, highlight the text you want to rewrite.
  2. In the text box, right-click.
  3. In the “Rewrite” card, select a predefined prompt like Rephrase, Emojify, Shorten, Elaborate, Formalize, or enter a custom prompt.
    • The prompt is the instruction to the Help me write tool about how to rewrite the text for you.
  4. Select the arrow button or, on your keyboard, press Enter.
  5. Select from the generated writing suggestions.
    • You can also further refine a suggestion to shorten, elaborate, add emojis, make it sound more formal, or rephrase it.
  6. Select Replace.

Tips:

  • You can rate the writing suggestion. In the “Help me write” box, select Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down.
  • If you select “Thumbs Down,” you can provide feedback on why the writing suggestion didn’t meet your needs.

Troubleshoot errors with Help me read & Help me write

Can’t find Help me read or Help me write in the context menu

If there’s no “Help me read” or “Help me write” in the context menu, the app may have a custom right-click menu. In apps that have a custom right-click menu, Help me read and Help me write aren’t available.

Not enough text, or too much text

When your text length isn’t supported, you’ll get an error message. Try a different page.

Unsupported language or unintelligible prompts

If the info you enter is in an unsupported language or is unintelligible, you’ll get an error message.

Server at capacity

Currently, Generative AI is experimental, in early development, and has limited availability. If the server is at capacity, it can’t process your request. Try again at a later time.

About Help me read & Help me write

Important:

  • Help me write doesn’t provide medical, legal, or financial advice.
  • When you use Help me read and Help me write, do not include personal information like:
    • Name
    • Phone
    • Address
    • Social Security number
    • Credit card information
  • Your input won’t be used by Chrome OS for model training.
  • Do not use this tool on sites that contain personal or sensitive information, like medical or financial sites.

To help you write more easily and effectively across the web, you can use Help me write, an experimental and creative writing aid that uses Generative AI.

Suggestions from Help me write might be inaccurate or offensive since it’s still in experimental status. Check Help me write suggestions before you accept them.

Help me write never submits text for you. When you insert a suggestion, it appears in the text box where you activated the feature. However, you must choose if you want to submit it, edit it, delete it, or simply close the webpage without taking any action.

How your data is used by Help me read & Help me write

When you use Help me read or Help me write, the text, the content, and URL of the page you're writing on will be sent to Google. As per Google Privacy Policy, this information is used to improve this feature, which includes generative model research and machine learning technologies. This information is also used to offer more contextual writing suggestions. Learn more about:
