Record audio & sounds on your Chromebook with Recorder

You can record audio on your Chromebook with Recorder.

What you need

You can get the Recorder on any Chromebook, but some AI features might only work in Chromebook Plus. You can transcribe your recordings with any Chromebook and if you have a Chromebook Plus, you can get an AI summary of the transcript.

Tips:

  • Features, like transcription, speaker labeling, and summarization need a few minutes to download the first time you use them. Fast internet connection is recommended to download the features.
  • Recordings are saved in your Chromebook’s internal storage. If you want to save them to a cloud storage service, use the Export feature.

Record audio with your Chromebook

  1. On your Chromebook's screen, at the bottom left, select Launcher .
  2. Open Recorder .
  3. From the Recorder, you can:
    • Start recording: Select Start recording .
    • Stop recording: Select Stop recording .
    • Mute or unmute: Select Microphone .
    • Pause recording: To temporarily pause the recording, select Pause .
    • Resume recording: Re-select Pause .
    • Show live transcription: Select Transcript .
      • If live transcription isn’t turned on:
        1. Go to Recorder settings .
        2. Turn on Enable audio transcription.
    • Delete the recording: To delete recording, select Delete .
      • To confirm delete recordings, select Delete.

Select audio sources

  1. To switch between audio sources, select Microphone .
  2. Select between the built-in microphone or any connected external microphone.

Tip: To record the system audio, select System audio. When the system audio is turned on, any sound played by the system, like sounds played by any Chrome tab, is recorded.

Change the settings of Recorder

  1. On your Chromebook's screen, at the bottom left, select Launcher and then Recorder and then Settings .
  2. Select from:
    • Do Not disturb: This prevents notification sounds from interrupting your recording, by turning off your Chromebook’s Do Not Disturb mode.
    • Keep screen on during recording: The screen won’t be turned off when the Chromebook is idle and recording.
    • Allow Speaker ID tracking: When there are multiple people speaking in a recording, the software will attempt to categorize each speaker as “Speaker 1,” “Speaker 2,”etc.
      • This feature is currently only available in English (US).
    • Enable audio transcription: You can get a live transcription while recording.
    • Transcription language: You can select the language for the transcription.
    • Enable AI summary: When you play back the recording, you get an AI generated summary on the Recorder screen.
      • To generate summaries, you must download the AI model.
      • The AI model might take up to 2GB of storage.

Play back your recordings

  1. To get into a play back mode on the recording homepage, select any of your previous recordings.
  2. You can:
    • Specify the timing to play: To set the starting point, select on the timeline or the waveform.
    • Adjust the volume: At the bottom left corner, drag the volume bar.
    • Skip 10 seconds forward or backward on your play back:
      • To skip 10 seconds forward: Select Forward 10 seconds .
      • To skip 10 seconds backward: Select Backward 10 seconds .
    • Adjust the play back speed: At the bottom right, select your play back speed.
      • The default is “1x.”
    • Show transcription: To show the transcript of your recording, select Transcript .
      • If “Transcript” isn’t there:
        1. Go to Recorder settings .
        2. Turn on Enable audio transcription.
    • Show generated summary: To show the generated summary of your recording, select Summary .
      • If “Summary” isn’t there:
        1. Go to Recorder settings .
        2. Next to “AI Summary,” select Download.

Rename your recordings

  1. On the playback screen, select the recording’s title you want to rename.
  2. Enter the new title.

Tips:

  • If the AI model is downloaded, you can also let the AI suggest a title. Select Generate title .
  • To download the AI model, go to Recorder settings .

Export the audio & transcription

  1. Open the recording you want to export.
  2. At the top right, select More .
  3. From the menu, select Export….
    • In the menu, “Export audio” is turned on by default.
    • To include the transcript with your export, select Export transcript and then Save.
  4. Select the location where you want to export your recording.

Tip: To export a recording on the recording homepage, select More and then Export .

Delete your recordings

Important: When you delete a recording, it’s permanently deleted and can’t be recovered.

  1. On the playback screen, select More and then Delete.
  2. To confirm delete recordings, select Delete.

Tip: You can also delete a recording on the recording homepage. On the recording you want to delete, select More and then Delete .

Provide feedback to the generated summary

  1. To give feedback about a generated summary:
    • Positive feedback: Select Thumbs up .
    • Negative feedback: Select Thumbs down .
  2. In the dialog box, enter your feedback.
