Reset your Chromebook hardware

To fix some Chromebook problems, you might need to reset your Chromebook hardware, also called a hard reset.

Try a hard reset only after other ways to fix the problem have failed. It will restart your Chromebook hardware (like your keyboard and touchpad), and might delete some files in your Downloads folder.

Hard reset your Chromebook

For most Chromebooks, follow the steps below:

  1. Turn off your Chromebook.
  2. Press and hold Refresh and tap Power .
  3. When your Chromebook starts up, release Refresh .

Tips:

  • You can also press and hold Back + Refresh + Power for at least 10 seconds.
  • On tablets: Press and hold the Volume Up and Power buttons for at least 10 seconds, then release them.

Other ways to hard reset

For some Chromebooks, you reset the hardware by pressing a special reset button, unplugging the power cable, or removing and re-inserting the battery. If you see your device in this list, follow the steps to reset its hardware.

Acer Chromebox, ASUS Chromebox, LG Chromebase, and Samsung Chromebox
  1. Turn off your Chromebox or Chromebase.
  2. Remove the power cable, then plug it back in.
Acer AC700 and Cr-48
  1. Turn off your Chromebook.
  2. Remove the battery, then put it back in.
  3. Turn on your Chromebook.
Asus Chromebit
  1. Turn off your Chromebit.
  2. Remove the power adapter, then wait several seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power adapter.
  4. Turn on your Chromebit.
Lenovo Thinkpad X131e
  1. Turn off your Chromebook.
  2. Remove the power adapter.
  3. Remove the battery, then put it back in.
  4. Reconnect the power adapter.
  5. Turn on your Chromebook.
Samsung Series 5 Chromebook
  1. Turn off your Chromebook.
  2. Remove the power adapter.
  3. Using a paperclip or similar object, press into the hole shown in the picture below.
  4. Hold the paperclip in place while reconnecting the power adapter.
  5. Turn on your Chromebook.

Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook
  1. Turn off your Chromebook.
  2. Remove the power adapter.
  3. Using a paperclip or similar object, press into the hole shown in the picture below.
  4. Hold the paperclip in place while reconnecting the power adapter.
  5. Turn on your Chromebook.

Fix blank screen issues

Even after trying the Hard reset steps, if your screen shows a blank screen, you can try the verification bypass key sequence.

Important:

  • The administrator can block the bypass key sequence.
  • Use this if your device has a completely blank screen.
  • If the bypass key sequence reboots your device, your:
    • User data is erased.
    • Device has an unsecured version of firmware.
    • Device restarts automatically after 15 minutes.

To bypass verification key sequence:

  1. Press and hold Power .
  2. Double tap Refresh .
  3. Release Power .
  4. Press and hold Power .
  5. Double tap Refresh .
  6. Release Power .

If the steps above don't fix the problem, you can factory reset your Chromebook.
