How to set up Google TV Streamer (4K)
There are 2 ways to set up your Google TV Streamer (4K) and Google TV Streamer Voice Remote:
Through the Google Home app (recommended)
What you need:
- Google TV Streamer
- Google TV Streamer Voice Remote
- Display device with an HDMI input, such as a high-definition television (HDTV)
- “Ultra High Speed” HDMI 2.1 certified cable (sold separately)
- Mobile phone or tablet with the latest version of the Google Home app on Android or iOS
- It also must support a 5 GHz connection to set up Google TV Streamer on a 5 GHz connection.
Note: A WPA2-Enterprise network isn't supported.
- Google Account
- Note: For best results, use a Gmail account.
- Secure Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection
- If you use a Wi-Fi network, make sure you have the password handy.
Set up your Google TV Streamer
- Plug your Google TV Streamer into an available HDMI port on your TV or other display device switch your TV to the HDMI input your Google TV Streamer is plugged into.
- Plug one end of the power adapter cable into your Google TV Streamer and the other end into the included power adapter. Plug the power adapter into an open outlet.
- If desired, connect your Google TV Streamer to an Ethernet network.
- Wait for the remote to pair. In most cases, the remote pairs automatically. However, if the TV screen shows "Start pairing," press and hold the Back and Home buttons on the remote until the light on the remote starts to pulse.
- Select the language you want to use.
- Select the region you’re in.
Continue setup with your phone
- When the TV screen shows instructions to set up with the Google Home app, open the Home app on your phone.
- If you've never used the Google Home app before, tap Get started enter the Google Account you want to use with Google TV Streamer.
- Tap Devices Add Google Nest or partner device .
- “Choose a home” or “Add another home." Tap Next.
- “Looking for devices…” will appear. If the Google TV Streamer is plugged in, “Google TV Streamer found” will show on the phone screen.
- Answer “Yes” when asked if you want to set up Google TV Streamer.
- Scan the QR code on your TV.
- Wait for the connection process to finish.
- Scroll down to read the Terms of Service and Google Privacy Policy. Tap Accept.
- Choose which room the TV is in. Tap Next.
- Select the Wi-Fi network. This should be the same one the Google TV Streamer is connected to. Enter the network password when prompted. Tap Next.
- “Sign in with your Google Account.” Tap Continue. Perform 2-step verification if prompted.
- Follow the steps on how to Set up & use Google Assistant on your TV until you reach "Setup here is finished," then continue with the TV and remote.
Through your TV or other display device
What you need
- Google TV Streamer
- Google TV Streamer Voice Remote

Set up the Google TV streamer with the Voice Remote
- Plug your Google TV Streamer into an available HDMI port on your TV or other display device switch your TV to the HDMI input your Google TV Streamer is plugged into.
- Plug one end of the power adapter cable into your Google TV Streamer and the other end into the included power adapter. Plus the power adapter into an open outlet.
- If desired, connect your Google TV Streamer to an Ethernet network.
- Wait for the remote to pair. In most cases, the remote pairs automatically. However, if the TV screen shows "Start pairing," press and hold the Back and Home buttons on the remote until the light on the remote starts to pulse.
- Select the language you want to use.
- Select the region you’re in.
- Choose Set up on TV down the bottom of the screen.
- Select the Wi-Fi network and enter your credentials using the directional pad of the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote.
- Sign in to your Google account.
- Scroll down to read the Terms of Service and Google Privacy Policy and choose Accept.
- Follow the steps on how to Set up & use Google Assistant on your TV until you reach "Setup here is finished," then continue with the TV and remote.
Set up the display control on your Google TV streamer Voice Remote
Check the TV screen for the status of your remote. If your remote is set up, continue to Finish setup with the TV and remote.
If the message on the screen says "Control volume and power with your Google TV Streamer remote," you need to set up your remote manually. You can Set up volume, power and input control on your Chromecast or Google TV Streamer Voice Remote to control your TV, receiver, or soundbar.
Finish setup with the TV and remote
- Wait for the TV to install the apps you selected on your mobile device.
- The TV screen should show "Welcome. Your Google TV Streamer is ready!" To go to the home screen, select Start exploring.
Troubleshoot setup
Troubleshoot phone setup
- Android: Check Bluetooth and location settings.
- Bluetooth: Open the Settings app tap Connected devices Connection preferences Bluetooth turn on Use Bluetooth.
- Location: Open the Settings app tap Location turn on Use location tap Home allow the app to use your location.
- iPhone or iPad: Check Bluetooth, location, and app permission settings.
- Bluetooth: Open the Settings app tap Bluetooth turn on Bluetooth.
- Location: Open the Settings app tap Privacy Location services turn on Location services.
- App permissions: Open the Settings app scroll to the apps section tap Google Home in "Allow Google Home to access," turn on Location, Bluetooth, and Local Network.
If you still can't continue setup with the Google Home app, you can use the Voice Remote. Hold down the "Back" button, then select the option to finish setup with the remote.
Basic troubleshooting steps
If setup still doesn't work, try the following steps:
- Ensure you have all the necessary items listed in the "What you need" section.
- Reboot your Google TV Streamer.
- Unplug your router and plug it back in.
- Make sure your phone and Google TV Streamer are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Factory reset your Google TV Streamer.
- Contact support.
You get the message "Please use Gmail account"
This message might appear during setup if you're using a Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) account. A Gmail account is strongly recommended instead, as it allows personalization and ensures your Google TV Streamer can access your media services.
To dismiss the message, tap Ok. You can then decide to continue setup with the same account or start setup again with a new account.
Note: If you proceed with a Google Workspace account of which you're not an administrator, some services such as app installation, YouTube, or parental controls might be unavailable or behave unexpectedly.
