Third-party display tags

Display & Video 360 supports ad tags from most major ad servers. When you add a third-party display ad tag, Display & Video 360 automatically wraps tags from supported ad servers with an impression tracking macro and a click tracking macro. By adding these macros, you'll be able to view the number of impressions, click, and conversions associated with the creative in Display & Video 360.

Add a third-party display tag

Follow these steps to upload one tag. If you need to upload more than one tag, save time with bulk upload.

  1. Open an advertiser, then click Creatives in the left menu.

  2. Click New and then Third party and then Third-party display.

  3. Enter a name for the creative in Display & Video 360 then select the correct dimensions for the new creative.

  4. If your creative doesn't expand, leave the Expanding direction to None. If it does expand, see the expandable creative settings.

  5. Paste your creative's third-party ad tag into Third-party tag text field. Tags can be up to to 8,192 characters and 32 KB. To shorten third-party tags, remove extra spaces and unnecessary code. If necessary, compress JavaScript code.

  6. Click outside the third-party tag field and Display & Video 360 will validate the ad tag. If the tag type is recognized, macros will be automatically inserted into the tag. If there are problems with validation, a warning is shown beneath the field.

Display & Video 360 can add macros automatically to tags from most major ad servers. If your tag isn't recognized, check the tag and try again. If there's a problem, you can add macros manually.
  7. Click Test tag, and then click your creative to make sure the click opens the landing page and the click-tracking macros work correctly.

    1. Once you've clicked, return to Display & Video 360. If click tracking was successful, you'll see a checkmark and the message "Click tracking received". If click tracking isn't working, check your tag, macros, and creative for potential problems.

    2. When you're done testing the tag, click Done.

  8. In the serving properties section, enter the landing page the user will be taken to when they click the ad. You must enter a full and valid landing page (for example: "https://example.com"). If you don't enter a full landing page, your creative will not be servable.

If you want to track the creative in Campaign Manager 360, and the tag is not already wrapped, you don't need to add a landing page. Instead:

    • Click Add Campaign Manager 360 tracking ad.

Do not embed a Campaign Manager 360 tracking ad within a third-party creative and select a Campaign Manager 360 tracking ad in Display & Video 360. Instead, select a Campaign Manager 360 tracking ad in Display & Video 360 only. If your third-party ad server requires you to embed the Campaign Manager 360 tracking ad, contact support for help.
    • Search for and select the tracking ad you want to use.

  9. Save the creative.

Display & Video 360 manually and automatically reviews your creatives to make sure they work. Creatives are also checked to make sure they comply with Google's ad policies and the policies of exchanges they can serve on. You can check the status of your creatives in the Creative status tab.

Advanced content. Advanced settings

The following settings are either optional or for expandable creatives only.

Optional

The technology used in your creative will be auto-detected, but you can also manually confirm by selecting one of the checkboxes. Keep in mind that there may be implications on where you can use your creative based on the technology.

  • Select Requires MRAID if your creative relies on mobile gestures for interactivity, such as swiping or tapping.

  • Select Requires HTML5 if your creative relies on HTML5 to render properly.

Expandable creatives only

  • To match your expandable creative with the correct inventory, select the correct Expanding direction
  • If the creative expands on mouseover instead of click, check the Expands on hover checkbox that appears after you select a direction.
  • When you test an expandable tag, expand the creative and make sure it expands in the direction or directions you set.
