Insert place chips

You can create a place chip in your document and use it to:
  • Quickly open the location in Google Maps
  • View the location in the Google Maps side panel
  • Find directions to the location

Create a place chip

  1. On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
  2. You can either:
    1. Go to Insert and then Smart chips and then Place.
    2. Type "@."
  3. Enter an address or place. 
  4. In the dropdown, select on option to create the place chip.

Copy a link from Google Maps

  1. On your computer, open Google Maps and find a location.
  2. Once you've found a location, copy the link in the address bar. 
  3. Open a document in Google Docs.
  4. Paste the link into the doc.
  5. Press Tab to create the place chip.

Get information on places and find directions

If you have a place chip in your Google Doc, you can open the location directly in Google Maps, see a preview of the location, or find directions.

Open the location in Google Maps

  1. Click or hover over the place chip to view related information.
  2. Next to the Maps icon Maps click on the location name to open the link in Google Maps.

See a preview of the location

  1. Click or hover over the place chip to view related information.
  2. Hover over the map and click View Preview.
    1. Tip: You'll see the preview in a side panel of your Google Doc. To see a preview in Google Maps, click Open in Maps. Learn more about how to use Google products side by side.

Find directions to the location

  1.  Click or hover over the place chip to view related information.
  2. At the bottom of the pop-up, click View DirectionsDirections.
    1. Tip: You'll see the directions in a side panel of your Google Doc. To see directions in Google Maps, click Open in Maps. Learn more about how to use Google products side by side.
  3. Add a starting point.
  4. Click on a route to get the directions.
