Create a video with AI in Google Vids (Workspace Labs)

Important: This article refers to Google Workspace Labs, which is an invite only program for users to try new AI Features. To check if you have access to Workspace Labs features, open Google Vids. A window to help you start creating in Vids will appear if you have access.Learn where you can use Workspace Labs features.

In Google Vids, use “Help me create'' to create a first draft video from prompts you write with Gemini. Your prompts can help Gemini to:

  • Generate:
    • An editable outline storyboard
    • Suggested scenes with suggested text 
    • Script narrative for videos and voice overs
  • Select:
    • Suggested stock video or images, which can be kept or swapped with your media
    • Suggested accompanying stock music, which can be kept or swapped with your media

Create a video with AI

Important: New features for Vids, such as “Help me create,” roll out gradually and may not be available to you yet.

You can create a video with Gemini in Google Vids using “Help me create.” Enter a prompt, then you can type the “@” symbol to add related documents. Once you’ve submitted your request and all related documents, Vids will generate:

  • A suggested outline, with suggested scenes populated with generated text
  • Stock media, including videos, images, and music
  • A scripted narrative to make edits and record voiceovers with

Video placeholders are also suggested in relevant scenes to help organize where to add your own video recordings.

  1. On your computer, open Google Vids.
  2. At the bottom of the screen, click Create new video and then Help me create .
  3. Enter a prompt or click a suggested prompt.
  4. Click Next.
    • Tips:
      1. To add related files to improve the output quality of your video: Enter the @ symbol, then add the file name or select from the drop down.
      2. To generate new suggested prompts, below the list of text prompts, click Shuffle .

  5. After your outline has been generated, to edit it, update the tiles that represent each scene.
    1. To edit the scene prompt, click the title text for a scene.
    2. To remove a tile, click Delete Delete .
    3. To add a new tile below, click Add Plus.
    4. To rewrite your prompt, type a new prompt and then to generate a new outline, click Try again.
  6. After you have a final outline, to customize the look and feel of your video, choose a design for your video from a list of options.
    1. To preview samples, click a design.
    2. To confirm, click Create the draft video.
  7. After you create your video, you can continue to edit or customize.
    1. Tip: “Help me create” generates a suggested script per scene for your video. To open the scripts panel and view or edit your generated scripts, click Show scripts .
  8. You may see “media placeholders” in your video. 
    1. Circular media placeholders contain stock people speaking and are meant for replacing with live voiceovers. Larger placeholders include a “Add your media” tag and are meant for replacing with your own media.
      1. To keep the media originally added to the placeholder, click Done .
      2. To add media from the stock media panel, click .
      3. To add media from the recording studio, to add recording, click .
      4. To add media from Google Drive or Google Photos, right-click and select Replace Video and then My Media.
      5. To upload media, right-click and select Replace Video and then Upload.

  • When writing prompts:

    Use natural language
    • Write like you talk
    • Express thoughts in full sentences
    Be specific
    • Provide as much context as possible.
    • Attach relevant documents. Use the @ symbol and descriptive prompts to specify details like audience, purpose, and goals.
    Make it a conversation
    • If the results don’t meet your expectations or you believe there’s room for improvement, fine tune your prompts.
    • To yield better results, use follow-up prompts and an iterative process of review and refinement.

“Explain our Q4 product roadmap for executives using @-file. This video informs company leadership on upcoming plans and strategy to achieve end of year goals.”

“Recap the process for an upcoming office move using @-file. This will be shared with all employees impacted by the move to prepare them for moving day.”

“Pitch our new product line of environmentally friendly seaweed packaging described in @-file. This will be shared with food and beverage manufacturers who are potential customers.”

“Remind employees to complete their annual self-assessments as explained in @-file. This process is important so this video will be shared with everyone in the company.”

“Pitch video shared to internal customer service teams to use our latest product update using @-file. This video should convince potential customers of our product to try new features.”

Important: To turn off any of the features on Google Workspace Labs you must exit Workspace Labs. If you exit, you will permanently lose access to all Workspace Labs features, and you won’t be able to rejoin Workspace Labs. Learn more about how to exit Workspace Labs.
