Use a tree map when you want to show a data tree, where objects are organized into parent-child hierarchies. For example, show the average annual sales of each item in a product category.

How to format your data
- First column: Enter the name of an object in your hierarchy.
- Second column: Enter the name of the object’s parent. The parent name must also appear in the first column.
- Third column: Enter a positive numeric value for each object. This value determines the size of each box. The aggregate total for the parent name must also be in the third column.
- Fourth column (Optional): Enter a positive numeric value for the color of the box.
- Rows: Each row represents a different item in a category.

Customize a tree map chart
- On your computer, open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
- Double-click the chart you want to change.
- At the right, click Customize.
- Choose an option:
- Chart style: Change the background color and font type.
- Tree map: Change the font style, add min or max values, or change box colors.
- Chart & axis titles: Edit or format title text.
