With Gemini in Google Drive, you can:
- Summarize a long document so you can quickly get the main points.
- Discuss a topic that requires synthesizing information from one or more files in your Drive.
- Retrieve quick facts about a project or topic without the need to find and read the relevant documents.
- Explore relevant topics so you can learn more about a subject.
Feature availability
- This feature is available to users on work or school accounts through a Gemini for Google Workspace add-on, and to users on personal accounts through Google One AI Premium. Learn about Gemini features and plans.

Get started with Gemini in Drive
- On your computer, go to drive.google.com.
- At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
- In the side panel, select a suggested prompt or write your own prompt. Select a suggestion
- Select from the list of suggestions.
- To get more options, select More suggestions.
- At the bottom, in the prompt box, replace the example text with the information that you want.
- Press Enter.
- At the bottom, in the prompt box, enter a prompt.
- Press Enter.
- Select from the list of suggestions.
- Optional: To remove your history, click More options Clear history.
Important: You lose your conversation history when:
- You reload your browser.
- You close and reopen the document.
- Your computer goes offline.

Things to ask Gemini in Drive
Select files & ask Gemini questions
- On your computer, go to drive.google.com.
- At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
- In the side panel, select a prompt or create your own, mentioning the title of the document in your prompt.
- Example: "Summarize the key points in 'Sales Team Meeting Notes.'"
- Press Enter.
- Gemini will display the summary of your file/document.
After receiving a response:
- Show the whole summary of the suggested content: Click View more .
- View which files and documents were used to generate the response: Click Sources.
- Generate new text: Click Retry .
You can also ask Gemini questions to understand your document better. Examples of prompts:
- “When is our contract with Vendor A expiring?"
- “Summarize this file for me in bullet points"
- "How many customer sign-ups did we get for this test application?"
- "Who wrote the Project B design doc?"
Select folders & ask Gemini questions
- On your computer, go to drive.google.com.
- At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
- In the side panel:
- Enter a prompt.
- Add “@” followed by the folder name.
- Example: "Find my files for Project Clover in @2024 Projects."
- Press Enter.
- After you receive a response:
- To show a full summary, click View more .
- To find which files and documents were used to generate the response, click Sources.
- To generate new text, click Retry .
Tip: To understand your folder better, you can ask Gemini questions, such as:
- “When is the next product review based on this folder?”
- “Tell me about @[Contract folder]”
- “What are the documents from Alice in this folder?”
Summarize the selected file or folder with “@” & ask Gemini questions
- On your computer, go to drive.google.com.
- At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
- In the side panel:
- Enter a prompt.
- Add “@” followed by the file or folder name.
- Example: "Summarize the key points in @Sales Team Meeting Notes."
- Press Enter.
- After you receive a response:
- For file summaries, click Sources to find which files and documents were used to generate the response
- To generate new text, click Retry .
Summarize information across several files with Gemini
- On your computer, go to drive.google.com.
- At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
- In the side panel, select a prompt or create your own.
- Examples:
- "Help me understand our team's 2024 strategy."
- "Summarize project X."
- Examples:
- Press Enter.
- Gemini will get the information elaborating on a topic based on your Google Drive files.
- You can:
- Send feedback about the suggested text: Click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
- See a different version: Click Retry .
- View which files and documents were used to generate the response: Click Sources.
- “How can I make someone else the owner of my file?”
- “How can I find a specific file in my Drive?”
Important: To get answers from the web, make sure to include phrases like “Use Google Search” or “Using web search” in your prompt.
- “Write a paragraph describing the weather today in Mountain View, California using web search.”
- “Help me write a paragraph explaining if lightning can strike the same place twice using only information from the web.”
Give feedback on generated output
Gemini for Google Workspace is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request.
If you get a suggestion that’s inaccurate or that you feel is unsafe, you can submit feedback.
- On your computer, at the bottom right of the generated text, click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
- If you click Bad suggestion , you can select the issue you found and enter additional feedback.
- Click Submit.
