Trouble using Google Fi internationally

If you’re traveling abroad and you're having trouble using Google Fi service, try the troubleshooting steps below to fix the issue. After each step, try using your phone to see if the issue is fixed.

If you don't have a phone designed for Google Fi, some international features might not be available. Check our list of compatible phones for more information.

1. Check Google Fi’s international roaming policy

For activation, extent of use, and suspension exits and exceptions, review Google Fi’s international roaming policy. To check if you have an international data suspension, check your Google Fi app homepage.

Here’s the list of the more than 200 supported countries and destinations where you can use Google Fi.

If you're outside of the supported destinations:

  • You can't use your phone for cellular calls, text, or data.
2. Make sure you're calling a valid number with the correct format

Calling other countries from the U.S.

If you're calling an international number from the U.S.:

  • Canada and U.S. Virgin Islands: Dial 1 (area code) (local number).
  • To all other countries: Touch and hold 0 until you see on the display, then dial (country code) (area code) (local number). For example, if you’re calling a number in the U.K., dial + 44 (area code) (local number).

Calling while you're outside the U.S.

If you're outside the U.S. and calling international numbers or the U.S.:

  • To call a number in the country you’re visiting: Dial (area code) (local number).
  • To call another country: Tap and hold 0 until you see + on the display, then dial (country code) (area code) (local number). For example, if you’re dialing a number in the U.K. from Japan, dial + 44 (area code) (local number).
    • If this number format doesn’t work, you can also try using the exit code of the country you are visiting. Use (exit code) (destination country code) (area code) (local number).

3. Make sure your mobile data is turned on

For Pixel:

  1. On your phone, go to Settings Settings​.
  2. Tap Network & Internet and then SIMs.
  3. Turn on Mobile data.

For Android:

  1. On your phone, go to Settings Settings​.
  2. Tap Network & Internet and then Internet.
  3. Next to your carrier, tap Settings.
  4. Turn on Mobile data.
4. Make sure your data roaming is turned on
  1. On your phone, go to your Settings Settings.
  2. To check what roaming settings are visible, search within settings.
  3. Make sure roaming is on.

You might have to tap Network & Internet and then SIMs.

This roaming toggle may not exist on your device. If you can’t find it, skip this step.

5. Make sure you turn on your international features

  1. Open the Google Fi website or app .
  2. In the "Home" tab, select Manage plan.
  3. Under "INTERNATIONAL FEATURES," turn on Service outside the US and Calls to non-US numbers.
6. Turn Airplane mode on, then off
Turning Airplane mode on and off will reset some settings and may fix your connection.
  1. On your phone, touch Settings Settings.
  2. Tap Network & Internet.
  3. Tap the switch next to “Airplane mode” on.
  4. Tap the switch next to “Airplane mode” off.

When you’re done, make sure Airplane mode is off, and wait 2—3 minutes before you test again. If Airplane mode is on, calling won’t work.

7. Restart your phone
Restarting your phone gives it a fresh start and is sometimes all you need to fix your issue. To restart your phone, follow these steps:
  1. Press and hold the Power button until the menu pops up.
  2. Tap Power off, and your phone will turn off.
  3. Press and hold the Power button until your device starts.

For iPhone settings, refer to the Apple article "Restart your iPhone."

8. Manually select a network
  1. Dial: *#*#FIROAM#*#* or *#*#347626#*#*.
  2. Turn off Automatically select a network.

Or

  1. Open Settings Settings.
  2. Tap Network & Internet and then Google Fi under SIMs.
  3. Turn off Automatically select a network.

For Samsung:

  1. Open Settings Settings.
  2. Tap Connections and then Mobile Networks and then Network Operators.
  3. Turn off Automatically select a network.

For the available networks to load, wait up to 2 minutes. Try to manually select each network until you can connect. After you successfully connect to a network, you don’t need to manually select more networks in the country.

Tip: If a network says “Forbidden,” try connecting anyway. If you successfully connect to this “Forbidden” network, the label will be removed.

Important: After you leave the international country you’re traveling in, make sure to turn on automatically select a network.

9. Talk to a Google Fi agent
If you try the steps above and still have issues with international service, contact Google Fi support.
