Why is there a local access fee on my internet bill?
Google Fiber’s agreements with local governments vary, including how we compensate local governments for access to roads, infrastructure, and public areas for construction, maintenance, and repairs.
100% of the fee goes directly to the local area in which the customer resides.
Why have some fees changed or been added?
Historically, local fees associated with access to public right of way have been connected to TV service. In areas where Google Fiber started solely focused on internet, there may already be a local access fee, such as San Antonio.
In areas where Google Fiber originally compensated the city from fees associated with TV subscribers, there may be changes.
As the number of traditional TV subscribers has shrunk and Google Fiber stopped offering traditional television service in favor of online streaming video options, we now compensate some municipalities based on our internet subscribers instead to ensure that we can continue local access to maintain our network.
How much will my fee be?
The fee is a small percentage of a customer’s total bill for the month, and thus may vary based on products and location. Customers will see their fee in their online Google Fiber account, on their bill, and in email.
