Fiber network security

Increase your Google Fiber network security by placing a router or server in the DMZ and set up port forwarding rules for all of your connected devices.

You can manage and monitor your Wi-Fi network and devices through the GFiber App or the Google Home app (for Google Wifi and Nest Wifi Pro users). You’ll find the answers to your technical questions there — from running a speed test, to restarting your router, to connecting devices to your network — and so much more.

Most Network Box customers are eligible to upgrade to a Nest Wifi Pro Router. To learn more, please visit the Router upgrade for Network Box customers article.

Set up port forwarding rules on the Network tab in Fiber to forward requests to applications and services that expect them.

You use advanced settings on the Network tab to set up and manage port forwarding rules for your non-Fiber devices on a device-by-device basis, and you can allow UPnP devices to set up port forwarding rules for themselves. Port forwarding can be set up manually, by UPnP devices, or any combination of the two. (Learn more about port forwarding.)

For devices with dynamic IP addresses assigned by the Network Box, port forwarding automatically adjusts for IP address changes. You do not need to reserve static IP addresses for these devices.

Set up a DMZ

A DMZ is a computer or subnet that serves as a neutral zone between the internet and your Google Fiber network designed to prevent outside users from gaining direct access to your network, servers or data. You can put public-facing services in the DMZ to isolate them from the rest of your network.

You can use advanced settings on the Network tab to designate a non-Fiber device to be the DMZ for your network. If you do this, the Network Box forwards to the DMZ all incoming requests to ports for which there are no port forwarding rules. The Network Box does not block any requests. The DMZ is responsible for blocking, forwarding, or acting on all requests that it receives.

Examples of how you might use a DMZ:

  • Place a third-party router in the DMZ, and have it perform specialized security or routing functions.

  • Place web or game server in the DMZ to isolate it from the rest of your Fiber network.

Some things to keep in mind if you decide to "chain" your own router and your Network Box:

  • Using your own router with the Google Fiber Network Box requires advanced networking experience. We do not recommend using these configuration settings unless you are an advanced user.

  • Any internally facing network configurations (such as specifying your Wi-Fi network name or password) can be configured on your router.

If you decide to use your own router, understand that our customer support staff is not trained to help you with non-Google Fiber routers.
