On your mobile device, you can talk to write in most places where you can type with a keyboard.
Important:
- Talk-to-text doesn't work with all languages.
- Some of these steps only work on Android 7.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.
Talk to write
- On your Android phone or tablet, install Gboard.
- Open any app that you can type with, such as Gmail or Keep.
- Tap an area where you can enter text.
- At the top of your keyboard, tap Microphone .
- When you see 'Speak now', say what you want to be written.
Tip: On some Pixel devices, you can also use Assistant to type with your voice.
Add punctuation
You can use different phrases to add punctuation to your text. Punctuation might not be available in all languages.
Some phrases that you can use are:
- Full stop
- Comma
- Exclamation mark
- Question mark
- New line
- New paragraph
Replace a word
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the document or message with the word that you want to change.
- Touch and hold the word.
- At the top of your keyboard, tap Microphone .
- When you see 'Speak now', say the new word.
Use the Voice toolbar
- On your tablet, open any app where you can type, such as Gmail or Keep.
- Tap an area where you can enter text.
- Tap Microphone .
- If prompted, tap a recording option:
- While using app: Allows voice recording any time that you use the app.
- Only this time: Allows voice recording once.
- Don't allow: Doesn't allow voice recording.
- On your first use, you'll be directed to the toolbar.
- To return to the full keyboard, tap Keyboard .
- To reopen the toolbar, tap Minimise .
- You can drag the toolbar to any area on the screen, including the sides.
Tips:
- To pause voice recording, tap Microphone .
- To add an emoji, say an emoji. Or, in the toolbar, tap Emoji and then select the emoji that you want.
- To use voice commands, say a command or tap one of the suggestions in the toolbar.
Switch languages
Important: Multiple languages must be enabled. Learn how to add keyboards.
- At the bottom left of the toolbar, tap the abbreviation for your default language.
- Select a language.

- In the toolbar, tap Menu or EN.
- Tap Show voice commands.
