Slide your finger to type

You can slide your finger from letter to letter to spell out words.

Important: If your device uses Android 8 (Go edition), some of these steps might not work.

Important: Not all languages work with this feature.

Write words

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, install Gboard.
  2. Open any app that you can type with, such as Gmail or Keep.
  3. Tap where you can enter text.
  4. Slide your finger across the letters to spell the word that you want. Then lift your finger.

Delete unwanted text

  1. On your Android device, open the document or message with the word that you want to replace.
  2. Tap where you want to put your cursor. From there, to:
    • Replace a word: Pick a suggestion.
    • Remove a word: Double-tap a word. Then tap Delete.

Change your keyboard settings

  1. On your Android device, open the Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap System and then Languages and input.
  3. Tap Virtual keyboard and then Gboard.
  4. Pick an option, such as Glide typing or Voice input.
