About Shorts previews for video action campaigns

Previews of your ads can help you see how your ads will appear on Shorts. Previews can help you decide which of your assets can render well across all devices. This article will help you understand how you can manually view previews of your ads.

Upload your video creatives in multiple aspect ratios for optimal results. It has been found that vertical creative assets in video action campaigns can optimise conversions 10–20% more per dollar on YouTube Shorts than campaigns that only used landscape assets.

How it works

If you don’t already have one, create a video action campaign to get started. To view previews of your video creatives in vertical format in Shorts, follow these steps:

  1. In your Google Ads account, when creating a video action campaign, you’ll be able to add a video creative to it.
  2. You will be able to see how your ads will appear in all eligible formats on the right side of the page.
  • You can also navigate through various formats using the navigation buttons on top of the preview manually.
  • You can choose the format in which you want to preview your ad using the drop-down next to the navigation bar.
  1. You can choose to see the preview of your ad in Shorts format by selecting it in the drop-down. The preview of your ad in vertical format will have the Shorts logo above the preview for your reference.
Note: The previews of your ads in vertical aspect ratio cannot be viewed on YouTube.

Best practices

  • Add videos longer than ten seconds and ideally, shorter than three minutes.
  • As a best practice, upload one video of each orientation, such as horizontal, vertical and square for optimal results.
  • Ads in vertical aspect ratios are mobile-friendly.
