Demand Gen campaign performance fluctuations: Changes to your account or campaign settings

Editing any account or campaign settings, such as bid strategy, budget, conversion goals, audiences, location, language, and ad scheduling can change your performance.

We recommend that you wait 7-14 days after making these major asset changes, before assessing performance, while also accounting for conversion delay.

Smart Bidding

Demand Gen campaigns use Smart Bidding strategies, it takes about 1-2 weeks for the campaign to learn and fully optimize for any newly added bidding strategy.

If your campaign is new, you may see fluctuations caused by Smart Bidding working as technically expect that can include spending your budget quickly. This kind of spending pattern is temporary (2–3 days) and will return to spending throughout the day as it learns and adjusts and/or as outside factors such as auction dynamics change.

Any changes to your conversion action settings, selective optimization setting, or attribution model can also impact your campaign’s performance while it adapts and optimizes towards these new settings.

Example

If your actual average CPAs have been around $10 USD for the past 14 days, suddenly reducing your Target CPA to $2 USD can cause a drop in serving or fluctuations in performance.

If you need to make changes to your targets to align with your business goals, we recommend making smaller changes and waiting to see the impact, instead of making larger changes.

Check change history for updates made to the account or campaign.

Note: You may see an increase in your spend if you recently added or received approval for a Google Merchant Center feed or removed a brand from your excluded brand list. We recommend that you wait 7–14 days after making these major asset changes, before assessing performance, while also accounting for conversion delay.
