Google I/O 2024: Making AI helpful for everyone

May 14, 2024

Today at Google I/O, we shared advancements in AI that are improving knowledge, learning, creativity, and productivity along with our ongoing commitment to building and deploying AI responsibly. AI is already unlocking potential for businesses and creating more helpful advertising experiences.

Expanding what’s possible with Google Search

People have already used AI Overviews billions of times through our experiment in Search Labs. Today, AI Overviews will begin rolling out to everyone in the U.S., with more countries coming soon.

And with a new Gemini model, customized for Google Search, you'll be able to do even more:

  • Answer your most complex questions, that are really 10 questions in one. In just a single search, you can ask "Find the best yoga or pilates studios in Boston…. and show me details on their intro offers… and walking time from Beacon Hill" and Search will do the research for you.

Example search "Find the best yoga or pilates studio in Boston and show me details on their intro offers, and walking time from Beacon Hill"

  • Brainstorm ideas when you don't know exactly what to ask, starting with dining and recipes. When you come to Search looking for inspiration like "anniversary celebration dinner places Dallas", Search will uncover the most interesting angles, and you’ll get an AI-organized page with helpful categories for you to explore.

Example search "anniversary celebration dinner places dallas"

  • Ask questions about what you see in the real world with video. Search can make sense of motion that’s difficult to describe—like a tonearm inexplicably drifting off your record player—and connect you to relevant insights from articles, forums, videos, and more.

We’ll continue to focus on sending valuable traffic to publishers and creators. As always, ads will continue to appear in dedicated slots throughout the page, with clear labeling to distinguish between organic and sponsored results. This means more opportunities for people to connect with businesses large and small around the world.

Other key I/O announcements include:

  • You can now build with Gemini 1.5 Pro and Gemini 1.5 Flash—our newest Gemini model—in Google AI Studio and Vertex AI in more than 200 countries around the world. These latest Gemini models are supporting an entire ecosystem of products, APIs, and platforms helping people, developers, and businesses.
  • Starting today, you can collaborate with Gemini 1.5 Pro in the side panel of your favorite Workspace apps like Gmail, Docs, and Drive. With Gemini in Workspace, you can now get the insights you need, grounded in Google Search, and the information in your Gmail inbox and Drive, without leaving the app you are working in.
  • Our new generative media models help you create images and videos with just a few text prompts. Imagen 3 is our newest text-to-image model coming soon to Vertex AI, and Veo is our new text-to-video model, with some capabilities coming in the future to YouTube Shorts. With Imagen 3 and Veo, you can easily brainstorm new content ideas, generate assets for marketing campaigns, and more.

Building and deploying AI responsibly

Building AI responsibly means both addressing the risks and maximizing the benefits for people and society. Today, we expanded our technical watermarking innovations like SynthID so AI-generated content is easier to identify, and we unveiled LearnLM, a new family of models based on Gemini to help make learning experiences more engaging, personal, and useful.
