Negative keywords in Performance Max campaigns (Beta)

By adding negative keywords to your Performance Max campaigns or account, you can avoid your campaigns showing for queries that contain those terms on Search and Shopping inventory.

This article shows you how to add negative keywords to your Performance Max campaign. Learn more About negative keywords.

Note:

  • Performance Max negative keywords are applicable to Search and Shopping inventory only.
  • Negative keyword lists aren’t available to use in your Performance Max campaigns.

How to apply negative keywords to your campaigns (Beta)

Add negative keywords to campaigns

You can choose whether to add negative keywords to all campaigns or a specific Performance Max campaign.

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon Campaigns Icon .
  2. Click the Audiences, keywords, and content drop down in the section menu.
  3. Click Keywords.
  4. Click the Negative keywords tab.
  5. To add negative keywords, click the plus button .
  6. Select your Performance Max campaign.
    • Note: You can’t apply negative keyword lists to Performance Max campaigns.
  7. Add keywords, one per line.
  8. Click Save to finish adding your keywords.

Edit negative keywords

You can edit negative keywords using the steps below.

  1. Select the keywords you want to modify.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Select Change keyword text.
  4. Add keywords, one per line.
    • Note: You can choose a match type by using the appropriate symbols.
  5. Click Apply to finish adding your keywords.

How to apply account level negative keywords

You can add negative keywords at the account level and they will automatically apply to all Search and Shopping inventory, including in your Performance Max campaigns.

Add account level negative keywords

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Admin icon Admin Icon .
  2. Click Account settings.
  3. Click to expand the "Negative keywords" section.
  4. Click the plus button and enter your negative keywords with one word or phrase per line.
  5. Click Save.
  6. To change the match type for the negative keyword, click the drop down in the "Match type" column and select the specified match type between broad, phrase, or exact match types.

Note: You can apply up to 100 negative keywords for each account.

If you’d like to remove, edit, or filter negative keywords from your account-level settings, you can do so on your Google Ads account.

Remove account level negative keywords

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Admin icon Admin Icon.
  2. Click Account settings.
  3. Click to expand the "Negative keywords" section.
  4. Select the check box next to the negative keywords that you want to remove.
  5. Click Remove.

Edit account level negative keywords

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Admin icon Admin Icon .
  2. Click Account settings.
  3. Click to expand the "Negative keywords" section.
  4. Hover over the keyword you want to edit, then click the pencil icon Pencil icon / edit icon .
  5. Edit keywords, match types, or both.
  6. Click Save.

Filter account level negative keywords

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Admin icon Admin Icon .
  2. Click Account settings.
  3. Click to expand the "Negative keywords" section.
  4. Click Add filter.
  5. Enter the keywords you want to search.
    • You can also filter the keywords with “Keyword text” and “Match type” from the dropdown.

Note: The filter can only be used to search specific terms.
