If you don’t have a mobile data plan for your car, some Google apps and services won’t work fully. You can still connect to the internet through Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot to use many features in Google Assistant, Google Maps, Google Play and other apps and services.
To learn about mobile data plans for your car, contact your vehicle’s manufacturer.
Google Assistant
You can only use all Google Assistant features when you’re connected to the internet. If you don’t have a mobile data plan, you can use Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot. Features that depend on mobile data to keep Google Assistant up to date may not be available when only connected via Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot.
Google Maps
You can only use all Google Maps features when you use a mobile data plan to connect to the internet. When you’re connected with Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot, you can use Google Maps to:
- Open the map
- Search for destinations
- Get directions
Features that depend on mobile data to keep Google Maps up to date aren’t available when only connected via Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot. For example, offline maps are automatically downloaded and updated based on your current location and travel patterns, and thus require a reliable data connection in order to function properly.
Google Play
You can only use Google Play when you’re connected to the internet. If you don’t have a mobile data plan, you can use Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot.
If you use other apps from Google Play built into your car such as Spotify or Audible, you may need an internet connection for some features to work. Contact the app developer to learn more.
