Benefits of Wi-Fi 6E with Nest Wifi Pro

Nest Wifi Pro is built with Wi-Fi 6E, a new Wi-Fi standard that has several benefits over previous generations of Wi-Fi.

Key Benefits of Nest Wifi Pro with Wi-Fi 6E

Faster wireless connections for Wi-Fi 6E devices

  • Nest Wifi Pro is a tri-band mesh Wi-Fi system that utilizes 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, new 6 GHz wireless radios to allow more data to flow through your router and deliver faster device speeds, up to 5.4 Gbps (4.2 Gbps outside of US) combined.1
  • The wider 6 GHz channels with far lower radio interference ensure a more responsive and faster connectivity experience for Wi-Fi 6E devices.2
  • Technology advancements in Wi-Fi 6E provide smoother performance for applications that rely on quick, responsive Wi-Fi like video calls, gaming, and AR/VR.
  • Supports up to 100 Wi-Fi devices per router.3

Faster internet speeds for non Wi-Fi 6E devices

  • Nest Wifi Pro uses the 6 GHz band for its mesh network to ensure that internet traffic while using mesh networks stays fast. This helps legacy 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi devices too.
  • With devices and mesh traffic on the dedicated 6 GHz band, additional bandwidth is now available on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz for the older devices, enabling faster wireless connection speeds.

Wi-Fi 6E explained

Nest Wifi Pro supports Wi-Fi 6E (AXE5400, or AXE4200 outside of US), the latest generation of Wi-Fi, which includes the 6 GHz band.

The term "AXE5400" is made up of several criteria. Here’s the breakdown:

  • AX = Wi-Fi 6 also known as 802.11ax
  • E = Includes the 6 GHz band (new radio frequencies in addition to basic Wi-Fi 6, which was 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz only)
  • 5400 = up to 5400 megabits per second (Mbps) of combined data flows through your router
    • Outside of US, "AXE4200" = 4200 megabits per second (Mbps)

Wi-Fi 6

Wi-Fi 6 is the current wireless standard created by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It follows 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5), which Nest Wifi and Google Wifi use, and 802.11n, which is considered Wi-Fi 4.

Wi-Fi 6E

Wi-Fi 6E routers benefit from using the Wi-Fi 6 standard and 6 GHz band for its connections. This is a next-generation improvement in Wi-Fi, and one of the biggest improvements in more than a decade.

Additional benefits of Wi-Fi 6E with the 6 GHz band over only Wi-Fi 6
As a tri-band router, Nest Wifi Pro can connect to devices over the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz frequencies. This results in:

  • Even faster connections on average and higher peak speeds
  • Much less congestion due to more effective 6 GHz wireless band, the presence of more nonoverlapping channels, and offloading 6 GHz devices and mesh connections to a third band
  • More overall data to flow through your network, up to 5.4 Gbps (up to 4.2 Gbps outside of US) combined
  • Lower latency helps with streaming for applications like gaming, AR/VR, screen sharing, and video streaming

Fast speeds and total throughput

With Wi-Fi 6E, Nest Wifi Pro can support up to 5.4 Gbps (up to 4.2 Gbps outside of US) of total data flowing through your router so you can have multiple devices performing well at the same time.1 This isn’t the top speed for a single device. For example, you could have the following devices connected for a total amount of traffic through the system of 5.4 Gbps (4.2 Gbps outside of US):

  • A high-resolution camera connected over 2.4 GHz, delivering 600 Mbps
  • A PC connected over 5 GHz, delivering 2400 Mbps (2.4 Gbps)
    • Note: Outside the US, only 80MHz supported channels are available (1.2 Gbps)
  • A phone connected over 6 GHz, delivering 2400 Mbps (2.4 Gbps)

With Nest Wifi Pro, you can easily test your internet speeds to each of your devices and check your mesh connections in the Google Home app.

Differences between Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 6

Both Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E devices can operate on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. But Wi-Fi 6E also has access to the new 6 GHz band, which can bring even faster speeds, less network congestion, and compatibility with some newer devices. Wi-Fi 6 routers don’t have a 6 GHz radio. Without the 6 GHz radio, it’s virtually impossible to find usable 160 MHz-wide radio channels, and so the effective speed of a connected Wi-Fi 6 device is half that of a Wi-Fi 6E device.

Wi-Fi 6E compatibility with devices

Nest Wifi Pro routers work with most existing devices that connect to your network, including those that use earlier Wi-Fi versions and the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Even these devices will benefit from Wi-Fi 6E since the 6 GHz band can support devices that’d otherwise be using one of the other bands. This results in less congestion across all bands and better performance.

Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E) can't be combined with Nest Wifi routers or points or Google Wifi points (Wi-Fi 5) in a mesh network.

1Combined speeds are total speeds across all bands, and are derived from IEEE Standard 802.11 specifications based on use of Wi-Fi 6 or later generation connected devices that support 160 MHz channels. Actual speeds will depend on your internet service provider, network conditions, connected device, local regulations and environmental factors.

2A Wi-Fi 6E client device is needed to directly access the 6 GHz band.

3This is based on only using connected devices at a maximum data rate of 1 Mbps. Requires sufficient broadband internet connection and connected devices must be located within Wi-Fi coverage area described at g.co/nestwifi/coverage. Strength and speed of signal will also depend on your internet provider.
