Set up and control Philips Hue Bluetooth®-enabled devices

Note: This article applies to Philips Hue Bluetooth-enabled devices only.

For information on how to set up and control devices from other makers, refer to the smart device control page and smart device setup page.

You can turn your Philips Hue Bluetooth-enabled smart devices on and off by the use of voice commands, the Google Home app, or a visual device like a Google Nest display. You can also control the color and brightness of lights. All Philips Hue Bluetooth-enabled smart devices can be paired with Google Assistant-enabled speakers and smart displays. You can connect up to 6 Bluetooth-enabled smart devices. If you want to set up more than 6, it's recommended that you upgrade to a Philips Hue bridge.

Set up and control your Philips Hue Bluetooth-enabled lights

Set up your lights

  1. Set up your speaker or smart display, if you haven’t already done so.
  2. Plug in and turn on your Bluetooth-enabled light in the same room as your speaker or smart display.
  3. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  4. Tap Devices   Add Google Nest or partner device Google Nest or partner device.
  5. Select the light bulb you’d like to set up. Your bulb will blink when selected.
  6. Where is this device? Choose what room your bulb is in.
    1. To create a custom room, tap Add custom room and then type in room name and then tap Next.
  7. Create a unique name. Type in the desired name for your bulb that you'll use for voice commands. It's recommended to use a contextual name like "reading light" or "overhead light." For best results, don’t include the room name in the light’s name (it knows which room it’s in).
  8. Setting up your smart light. Your bulb may blink a few times.
  9. Your light is ready. Tap Done.
  10. Setup is successful. You can now control your lights with your Google Nest or Home speaker or display.

Control your lights

Basic voice commands

To do this: Say "Hey Google" or “Ok Google," then:
To turn on or off a specific light (example: "desk light") "Turn off the desk light"
Dim lights "Dim the desk light" or “Dim all the lights"
Brighten lights "Brighten the desk light"
Set a light brightness to a certain percentage "Set desk light to 50%" or "Set lights to 70%"
Dim or brighten lights by a certain percentage "Dim/brighten lamp by 50%" or "Dim/brighten lights by 10%"
Turn on or off all lights "Turn on/off all of the lights"
Set lights to wake color "Set lights to bright white"
Set lights to everyday color "Set lights to soft white"
Set lights to sleep color "Set lights to candlelight"
Change the color temperature of lights

"Change lights to 2700 kelvin (2000-7000 range)"

Note: When your speaker or smart display, and compatible lights, are in the same room in the Google Home app (because you would assign your light a room during setup), your speaker or display will know your voice commands are for the lights in that room. For example, if your speaker or smart display, and smart lights, are in the living room, and you say "Hey Google, turn off the lights," then the living room lights will turn off.

Other ways to control your lights

  • You can turn your lights on and off from the Google Home app. You can also change the color temperature.
  • To control your lights and other smart devices with just one voice command, you can set a routine.

Set up and control your Philips Hue Bluetooth-enabled plugs

Set up your plugs

  1. Set up your speaker or smart display, if you haven’t already done so.
  2. Plug your Bluetooth-enabled plug into an outlet in the same room as your speaker or smart display.
  3. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  4. Tap Devices   Add Google Nest or partner device Google Nest or partner device.
  5. Select the plug you’d like to set up.
  6. Where is this device? Choose what room your bulb is in.
    1. To create a custom room, tap Add custom room and then type in room name and then tap Next.
  7. Create a unique name. Type in the name for your plug that you'll use for voice commands. It's recommended to use a contextual name like "entertainment plug" or "coffeemaker plug." For best results, don’t include the room in the plug’s name. (When you say the room name in a voice command, your speaker or display controls all the plugs in the room.)
  8. "Setting up your smart plug...."
  9. Your plug is ready. Tap Done.
  10. Setup is successful. You can now control your plugs with your speaker or display.

Control your plugs

Turn a plug on or off

"Turn on coffeemaker plug"

"Turn off entertainment plug"

Turn all plugs on or off

"Turn on all the plugs"

"Turn off all the plugs"

Note: When your speaker or smart display, and compatible plugs, are in the same room in the Google Home app (because you would assign your plug a room during setup), your speaker or display will know your voice commands are for the plugs in that room. For example, if your speaker or display, and smart plugs, are in the living room, and you say "Hey Google, turn off the plugs," then the living room plugs will turn off.

  • To control your plugs and other smart devices with just one voice command, you can set a routine.

Set a name for your device

  1. To create or change a nickname, open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap and hold your device's tile.
  3. At the top right, tap Settings Settings icon and then Name.
  4. Enter a name and then tap Save.

Tip: Because you assigned your device to a room during setup, your speaker or display already knows the room it’s in. Your voice commands will be more clear if you use a contextual name like "overhead light" or "cooking plug" instead of a name like "kitchen plug."

Unlink your device(s) from the Google Home app

Note: You cannot unlink individual Philips Hue smart devices. When you remove one device through the "Unlink Philips Hue" flow, it will remove all Philips Hue devices.

  1. Make sure your device(s) are powered on.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Tap and hold your device's tile.
  4. Tap Settings  Unlink Philips Hue and then Unlink (Note: This will remove all your Philips Hue smart devices. Currently, it doesn't support the individual removal of Philips Hue smart devices.)

If the Google Home app can't find your device during setup

  1. Turn the device off for 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
  2. Make sure you have the latest version of the Google Home app.
  3. Reboot your speaker or display.
  4. Force close the Google Home app.
  5. Factory reset your Philips Hue smart devices.
  6. Factory reset your speaker or display.

Note: If your devices don’t show up in either the Google Home app or the Philips Hue app, they probably need to be factory reset.

If your device doesn't respond

  1. Make sure the wall outlet receives power. Check that your wall switch is on.
  2. Turn the device off and on. The device takes up to one minute after receiving power to reconnect to the Google Nest or Home device. Try your device and check if it works. If so, you’re done.
  3. Try the device in a different wall outlet. If you have a light, also try it in a different lamp or socket.
  4. If the above steps don’t work, you may need to factory reset your Philips Hue smart device and set up the device again.​

If you get the error message "Something went wrong"

  • The signal between your device and your speaker or display might not be strong enough. To increase the signal strength, move the device and speaker or display closer to each other. They should be no more than 15 feet apart.
  • You might not be a member of the home that the device was set up in. Ask the person who created the home to add you as a member.
  • Other devices near your speaker or smart display or Philips Hue smart devices might cause interference. If you have a nearby Wi-Fi router, cordless phone, microwave, or Bluetooth speaker, move it further away if you can.
  • You might have too many Philips Hue smart devices. You can add up to 6 devices.

If you're still unable to resolve the issue, share feedback about speakers or displays.

Factory reset your Philips Hue Bluetooth-enabled devices

  1. Make sure all your devices are turned on.
  2. Factory reset your devices.
  3. Reboot the speaker or display that you use to set up your devices. Then attempt to re-setup your devices using the Google Home app.

Note: If your devices are connected to the Philips Hue app, you can also factory reset your devices. Just press the reset button from the Philips Hue app.
