Update is taking longer than expected

To enjoy the latest and greatest features available on your Google Nest or Home speaker or display, it may need to update to the most recent software version. The update can take up to 10 minutes.

For more information about updates and how to fix issues, choose your device below:

Google Home Google Home

To successfully update your device, make sure your Google Home is:

  1. Powered on.
  2. Tightly connected to the power supply and the power supply is firmly plugged into a wall outlet.

The lights on top of the Google Home are a great way to check the status of your update. If after 15 minutes you get:

No lights

This likely means your Google Home is connected to the network and ready for use. Start to say “Hey Google” and ask a question or give a command.

White lights that light up from top to bottom

The update is preparing to download. Don't unplug your Google Home or adjust your Wi-Fi settings during this time.

6 white dots spin clockwise

This means the update is still in progress. If the update has already taken more than 20 minutes, try the first step below. If that doesn’t work, try the next step in the list:
  1. Reboot Google Home. Unplug it from the power source, wait for about one minute, and plug it back in.
  2. Reboot your router. Unplug it from the power source, wait for about one minute, and plug it back in.
  3. Factory reset the device and connect it to a 2.4 GHz network, if available.

Note: Google Home won't respond to "Ok Google" or "Hey Google" while it's updating. 

6 solid orange lights

This means something may have gone wrong with the update. Make sure:

  1. You use the power cord that came in the box.
  2. Google Home is plugged into a wall outlet.
  3. To unplug your Google Home, wait about 10 minutes, and plug it back in.

If this doesn't fix the issue, contact Google Nest support.

Googel Nest Mini Google Nest Mini (2nd gen)

Note: The Google Nest Mini (2nd gen) has a wall mount screw slot on the back. If your device doesn’t have a wall mount screw slot, it's a Google Home Mini (1st gen).

To successfully update your device, make sure Nest Mini is:

  1. Powered on.
  2. ​Tightly connected to the power supply and the power supply is firmly plugged into a wall outlet.

No lights

This likely means Nest Mini is connected to the network and ready for use. Start to say “Hey Google” and ask a question or give a command.

The update is downloading. Don't unplug Nest Mini or adjust your Wi-Fi settings during this time.

If the update has already taken more than 20 minutes, try the first step below. If that doesn’t work, try the next step in the list:

  1. Reboot Nest Mini. Unplug it from the power source, wait for about 10 seconds, and plug it back in.
  2. Reboot your router. Unplug it from the power source, wait for about one minute, and plug it back in.
  3. Factory reset the device and connect it to a 2.4 GHz network, if available.

Note: Google Nest Mini won't respond to "Ok Google" or "Hey Google" while it's updating.

2 solid red lights

This means something may have gone wrong with the update. Make sure:

  1. You use the power cord that came in the box.
  2. Google Nest Mini is plugged into a wall outlet.
  3. To unplug Google Nest Mini, wait about 10 minutes, and plug it back in.

If this doesn't fix the issue, contact Google Nest support.

Google Home Mini Google Home Mini (1st gen)

To successfully update your device, make sure Home Mini is:

  1. Powered on. 
  2. Tightly connected to the power supply and the power supply is firmly plugged into a wall outlet.

  2. Reboot your router by unplugging it from the power source, waiting about 1 minute, and plugging it back in.
  3. Factory reset the device and connect it to a 2.4 GHz network, if available.

Note: Google Home Mini won't respond to "Ok Google" or "Hey Google" while getting an update.

2 solid red lights

This means something may have gone wrong with the update. Make sure: 

  1. You're using the power cord that came in the box.
  2. Google Home Mini is plugged into a wall outlet.
  3. To unplug your Google Home Mini, wait about 10 minutes, and plug it back in.

If this doesn't fix the issue, contact Google Nest support.

Google Home Max Google Home Max

To successfully update your device, make sure Home Max is:

  1. Powered on.
  2. Tightly connected to the power supply and the power supply is firmly plugged into a wall outlet.

 Google Nest displays

If after 15 minutes you get:

Clock or Photo frame

This means your display is connected to the network and ready for use. Start to say “Hey Google” and ask a question or give a command.

Screen that says "Updating" with a % complete

The update is downloading. Don't unplug your display or adjust your Wi-Fi settings during this time.

If the update has already taken more than 20 minutes, try the first step below. If that doesn’t work, try the next step in the list:

  1. Reboot your display. Unplug it from the power source, wait for about one minute, and plug it back in.
  2. Reboot your router. Unplug it from the power source, wait for about one minute, and plug it back in.
  3. Factory reset the display and connect it to a 2.4 GHz network, if available.

Note: Your display won't respond to "Ok Google" or "Hey Google" while it's updating.

If this doesn't fix the issue, contact Google Nest support.
