Manage your Pixel Tablet's location settings

Learn how to control your Pixel Tablet's location settings, change location permissions for your apps, find a lost tablet, or change other location settings.

How your device finds your location

Your device uses your IP address to find your approximate location, and sends that information to Google Location Services to estimate your time zone. Your device might also send info about nearby Wi-Fi or data networks if you choose to set the time automatically using your location.

Turn location settings on or off

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap Location and then turn on Use location.

Note: If you turn this setting off, you might not be able to use some location features or find your device if it's lost.

Set the time automatically with your location

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap System and then Date & time and then turn on Set time automatically.

Find a lost Pixel Tablet

Turn on Find My Device to encrypt and send your tablet's most recent location to Google. This can help you find your tablet if it gets lost. To turn on this feature:

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap Security & privacy and then Find My Device and then turn on Use Find My Device.
  3. Under "Ways to use Find My Device", tap an option:
    • Find My Device app: Open Google Play to download the Find My Device app.
    • Find My Device web: Open the Find My Device website in a browser.

Change location access settings for specific apps

You can control how apps on your tablet use location settings. Turn location settings on or off for specific apps, or turn on location access prompts for apps that use them.

To change location settings:

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap Location and then App location permissions.
  3. Tap the app you want to change settings for.
  4. Tap the location access setting you want to use:
    • Allow all the time: Let the app use location settings, even in the background.
    • Allow only while using the app: Use location settings only when you run the app.
    • Ask every time: Get a prompt to allow or not allow location settings.
    • Don't allow: Don't grant location access for the app.

Note: Some of these settings are only available for certain apps.

Change other location settings

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap Location and then Location services.
  3. Tap a setting and turn it on or off:
    • Emergency Location Service: Turn this on to let your device automatically send its location to emergency response providers, if supported in your region.
    • Google Location Accuracy: Turn this on to use Wi-Fi, mobile networks, and sensors to help estimate your location.
    • Google Location History: Choose an account and check its location history.
    • Google Location Sharing: Check if you're sharing your real-time location with anyone on Google.
    • Wi-Fi scanning: Let apps and services on your tablet scan for Wi-Fi networks to improve location-based features and services.
    • Bluetooth scanning: Let apps and services scan for nearby devices, even if Bluetooth is off. This can improve location-based features and services.
