You can change the display colour for most eBooks. For some eBooks, you can also change the font size, colour and line spacing.
Make the font bigger
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app .
- Open a book.
- Depending on the book:
- Tap the top of the screen. Then, tap Display options Text Increase font size .
- Pinch open to zoom in.
Tip: If your view is set to Original pages, you can keep the same font size later. Turn on Remember zoom in the Display options.
Change the font style, alignment and spacing
Tip: Not all books offer these options.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app .
- Open a book.
- Tap the top of the screen Display options Text.
- Change a setting:
- Font style: Tap a typeface.
- Line spacing: Tap Increase line space or Decrease line space .
- Text alignment : Tap Default, Left or Justify.
Change the page layout
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app .
- Open a book.
- Tap the top of the screen Display options Text.
- Under 'Page layout', select your preferred format.
- Auto: Depending on your device’s orientation and screen size, the layout is automatically set.
- 1 page: Display one page at a time.
- 2 page: Display two pages at a time.
Tip: Not all books offer more than one page layout.
Change the colour and brightness
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app .
- Open a book.
- Tap the top of the screen Display options Lighting.
- Change the colour or brightness:
- To make the screen brighter, drag the brightness scale.
- To change the colour scheme, tap Light, Sepia or Dark.
Tip: If you change your phone’s theme, it changes the colour in Play Books. For example, if you change your phone’s setting to Dark theme, the Play Books app will also use a dark colour scheme.
Make it easier to read at night
As the sun sets, Night Light gradually filters the blue light from your screen. Blue light is replaced with a warm amber light. Turn it on once, and Night Light will always adjust to the perfect setting.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app .
- Open a book.
- Tap the top of the screen Display options Lighting.
- Turn on Reading Night Light.
Tip: You can also turn on Night Light from your phone’s settings. If you use Night Light for your phone, the Play Books app will also use the reading Night Light.

Show your reading progress
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app .
- Open a book.
- To show your reading stats, tap anywhere on the page.
- To hide your stats, tap two more times.
- To select a page number, tap on the top half of the page, and use the slider that appears below.
Quickly flip between pages
- On your mobile device, open the Google Play Books app .
- Open the book.
- Tap the centre of the page.
- To flip through the pages:
- Swipe left or right.
- Use the slide bar at the bottom of the screen.
- To go back to the start page, on the progress bar, tap the page thumbnail.
