Create labels to organize Gmail

You can create labels that store your emails. Add as many labels as you want to an email. 

Note: Labels are different from folders. If you delete a message, it will be erased from every label that it’s attached to and your entire inbox.

Add a label to a message

Add a label to a single message
  1. Make sure you've downloaded the Gmail app.
  2. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  3. Open a message. (If you want to stay in your inbox, tap the sender's profile image.)
  4. In the top right, tap More More and then Change labels.
  5. Check the boxes next to the labels you want to add.
  6. In the top right, tap Apply Apply.
Add a label to multiple messages
  1. Make sure you've downloaded the Gmail app.
  2. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  3. On the left, tap the sender's profile image next to the messages you want to label.
  4. In the top right, tap More More and then Change labels.
  5. Check the boxes next to the labels you want to add.
  6. In the top right, tap Apply Apply.
Move a message to another label
  1. Make sure you've downloaded the Gmail app.
  2. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  3. Open the message. (If you want to stay in your inbox, tap the sender's profile image.)
  4. In the top right, tap More More and then Change labels.
  5. Uncheck the boxes next to the current labels, then select new labels.
  6. In the top right, tap Apply Apply.
Label messages automatically
If you want to automatically add labels to specific messages, such as from a certain sender, follow these steps.
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings .
  3. Tap Inbox customizations and then Inbox customizations and then Labels.
  4. Tap a label name. If you don't see a label you want to use, create a new label first.
  5. Tap Add.
  6. In the "From" field, type a name or email address.
    • To add more search criteria, like a subject or keyword, tap And.
  7. At the top right, tap Save.
Note: Only new messages that match these criteria will be automatically added to the label.

Create a gmail folder label
  1. Make sure you've downloaded the Gmail app.
  2. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  3. Tap the Menu .
  4. Under "Labels," tap Create new.
  5. Type a name.
  6. Tap Done.
Edit label
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings .
  3. Tap Inbox customizations and then Inbox customizations and then Labels.
  4. Select the label you want to edit or delete.
  5. Tap Name.
  6. Create a new name.
  7. Tap Done.
Delete label
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings .
  3. Tap Inbox customizations and then Inbox customizations and then Labels.
  4. Select the label you want to edit or delete.
  5. Tap Delete.
