Users with Google Workspace accounts can use conversation summaries that automatically appear in spaces with many unread messages. Gemini alpha users can also request summaries of unread conversations and spaces in the Chat home screen.
Turn conversation summaries in spaces on and off
To stay updated on long, unread conversations in spaces where you're a member, use conversation summaries. When you turn on conversation summaries, they automatically:

Appear when necessary in conversations.

Summarise conversations in English.
Important: Conversation summaries are only available for Google Workspace accounts.
Turn conversation summary on and off in Google Chat- On your computer, open Google Chat.
- Click Settings Conversation summary.
- Tick or untick the box next to 'Show summaries in spaces with many unread messages'.
- On your computer, open Gmail.
- Click Settings See all settings Chat and Meet.
- Click Manage chat settings Conversation summary.
- Tick or untick the box next to 'Show summaries in spaces with many unread messages'.
Use Gemini summaries for unread conversations in Home
Important: Gemini summaries are only available for selected customers to test in Gemini alpha.
You can use Gemini to show summaries for unread conversations including group messages, spaces and threads. Summaries are not available for 1:1 conversations.
Feature availability:
- This feature is available as part of Gemini for Google Workspace alpha.
- Your administrator controls access to Gemini for Google Workspace alpha. If you can't find these features, your administrator may not have alpha features enabled for your organisation.
Important: To enable conversation and space summaries in Home, you must turn on smart features in Gmail.
Turn on smart features in Gmail- On your computer, go to Gmail.
- Click Settings See all settings.
- Under the 'General' tab, tick the boxes next to 'Smart features and personalisation' and 'Smart features and personalisation in other Google products'.
Tip: To use the feature on web, Android or iOS, the boxes for both 'Smart features and personalisation' and 'Smart features and personalisation in other Google products' must be ticked.
Summarise unread conversations in Home
You can choose to summarise a specific unread conversation or space in Home.
- On your computer, open Google Chat or Chat in Gmail.
- Hover over the conversation or space that you want to summarise in Home.
- Click Summarise.
