Guidelines

Follow these guidelines to make sure you submit high-quality data for your products.

Minimum requirements

These are the requirements you'll need to meet to show your product on Google. If you don't follow these requirements, we'll disapprove your product and let you know in the Diagnostics page of your Manufacturer Center account.

  • Submit the color of your product.
  • Use the same color in your product data as on your landing page. For example, if you use "Toasted Walnut" on your landing page, then submit that value in your product data. Don’t submit "Brown".
  • Submit color [color] for all products that vary by color. Use this attribute when your product is a variant that’s distinguished by its color (for example, black suede shoes and blue suede shoes), and also submit each variant with the same value for the item group ID [item_group_id] attribute.

  • Include up to 3 colors. If your product is made up of several colors, you can specify 1 primary color followed by up to 2 secondary colors that are each separated by a slash ( / ). For example: Red/Green/Black. Don’t submit multiple colors with a comma ( , )
  • Don’t use a number as a color such as "0 2 4 6 8".
  • Don’t use characters that aren’t alphanumeric such as "#fff000".
  • Don’t reference the product or image such as "see image".
  • Don’t include a value that isn’t a color such as "variety", "mens", "womens", "N/A".

Best practices

These best practices can help you go beyond the basic requirements to optimize your product data for performance.

  • Submit a material value in addition to color to indicate a precious metal. If your product is made of a precious metal, like a gold ring, submit this information with the material [material] and color [color] attributes.
  • You may use standard color names in your product title. For the color [color] attribute, submit the color that matches your landing page. If you'd like to keep the generic color value, use the title [title] for placing the generic value. For example, a user is more likely to search for "red dress" than "cinnamon apple dress".
  • Use consistent names of colors across variants of the same product, as well as across multiple products of the same category, for example if you sell a handbag in 3 colors, "red", "pink", and "blue", submit "red", "pink", and "blue" and not "red, pink, and see product for details".

Examples

Unique color names

If you describe your product on your landing page using a unique color, like "Pop Girl" or "High Five", submit that value through the color [color] attribute. Then add a more standard color name, like "Red" or "Black", to your title [title].
