Use Gemini in Google Messages

You can chat with Gemini in the Google Messages app to draft messages, brainstorm ideas, plan events or simply have a fun conversation.

What you need

  • An Android phone.
  • Your phone's language is set to a supported language.
  • The latest version of Google Messages . Get it on Google Play.
  • A personal Google Account that you manage on your own.
    • You can't use Gemini in Google Messages with a Google Account that's managed by Family Link, or with a Google Workspace account.
  • Be 18 or over.
  • RCS chats turned on. Learn how to turn on RCS chats.

Start a chat with Gemini in Google Messages

Important: Chats with Gemini aren't end-to-end encrypted.

  1. On your Android phone, open Google Messages .
  2. Tap the chat with Gemini, or tap Start chat and then Gemini.
  3. For the first time, follow any on-screen instructions.
  4. Enter your question or prompt.
    • The first time that you chat with Gemini, you can explore different conversations. Just tap a suggestion above the message field.
  5. Optionally, to add a photo to your prompt, tap Show attach media screen .
  6. Tap Send message .

Tip: You can also use extensions in your chat with Gemini in Google Messages. Learn more about extensions and how to turn them on or off.

Examples

  • I haven't reached out to my friend in a while. Help me draft a short message to check in and reconnect.
  • Suggest a 3-course dinner menu that's impressive but manageable for a novice cook. Dietary restriction: vegetarian.
  • I'm going to a social event where I barely know anyone. Come up with a few interesting conversation starters.

Give feedback on a Gemini response

  1. Touch and hold the response that you want to give feedback on.
  2. At the top, tap Good response or Bad response .

  2. Tap More and then Report legal issue.

Delete your Gemini chat

Important:

In Google Messages

After you complete the steps below, your Gemini chat is deleted from your Gemini Apps activity and Google Messages.

  1. In Messages, open your chat with Gemini.
  2. At the top, tap More  and then Delete conversation.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
In Gemini Apps activity

After you complete the steps below, your Gemini chat is deleted from your Gemini Apps activity. It doesn't delete the chat from Google Messages or any Android backup of your messages. To also delete it from Google Messages, follow the steps to delete the chat from Google Messages.

  1. Go to your Gemini Apps activity.
  2. Next to a prompt or response in Google Messages, tap Delete activity item .
    • Activity from Google Messages shows a ' Google Messages' label.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Tip: To access your Gemini Apps activity from the Gemini web app, go to gemini.google.com. Then at the top, tap Menu and then Activity.

Gemini in Messages doesn't have access to your precise location. It uses the general area from your IP address or the home or work addresses in your Google Account to give relevant responses to prompts, like 'What's the weather?'. Learn more about how Gemini in Messages estimates your general area.
