In the Google Messages app, you can move your conversation to a phone or video call while you message someone if you need to.
- If you have a single active SIM in your device:
- When you click on the phone icon, your default calling app immediately calls your contact and their phone begins to ring.
- If you have two active SIMs in your device:
- Your default calling app opens with the phone number prepopulated, but to place the call, press the call button.
- In either case, when you're done with the phone call, you return to the conversation in the Google Messages app.
Start a phone call
- Open Google Messages .
- Tap the conversation with the person you wish to have a phone call with.
- At the top right of the conversation screen, tap the phone icon .
Start a video call
With Google Messages, you can continue a conversation on a video call when certain conditions are met. You can start a video call through carrier-provided video calling (ViLTE or VoLTE) or the Google Meet app.
- By default, if both of you have ViLTE or VoLTE, the call is placed through carrier-provided video calling.
- If one or both of you doesn't have ViLTE or VoLTE, the video call is placed through Google Meet. Both of you need to have the app installed, set up, and be signed in to the app. The call recipient also needs a reachable phone number stored in their Google Account.
Begin a video call
Important: For the video call icon to appear in the conversation, the conditions below need to be met.
- Open Google Messages .
- Tap the conversation with the individual you wish to have a video call with.
- At the top right of the conversation screen, tap the video icon .
Tip: If you don't have carrier-provided video calling or Google Meet set up, you can set up Google Meet through Google Messages. To turn on video calls in a Google conversation for future messages, tap Menu Google Meet . This takes you to the Meet app, where you can set up video calls.
