Cardless cash withdrawal from ATMs with UPI

With this feature, you can withdraw money from an ATM with your Google Pay app without the use of your debit card. When you select the option “UPI Cash withdrawal” and an amount on an ATM, you can do a normal UPI transaction through a QR scan payment on Google Pay. After the transaction is successfully done, the ATM dispenses the cash.

UPI cash withdrawal is currently available for selected banks and ATMs.

Tip: Check the list of banks that offer UPI-ATM services. To know when your bank will support this feature, contact your bank through digisaathi.info.

Primary benefits of the feature:

  • Ease of access
    • If you have a bank account linked to Google Pay, you can use it to withdraw cash from any bank’s ATM where the feature is available.
  • Cardless
    • You don’t need to carry your physical debit card to perform this transaction at the ATM machine. You can use your Google Pay app.

Tip: For this feature to work, both your bank added to Google Pay and the ATM’s acquiring bank must support it.

Discover the feature in the ATM:

  1. Go to an ATM.
  2. On the ATM screen, select one of the options below, whichever is available:
    • UPI Cash Withdrawal
    • ICCW
    • Interoperable Cardless Cash Withdrawal.

On the ATM, select the appropriate amount. You can:

  • Select among the prefilled ones.
  • Enter the amount you want to withdraw.

The ATM generates a secure and signed dynamic QR on the ATM screen for 30 seconds.

Complete the transaction on Google Pay Complete the transaction on Google Pay

  1. On your mobile device, open Google Pay app ,
  2. Scan the QR code on the ATM screen.
    • Amount and payee details are pre-filled.
    • On the payflow screen, you can find all the eligible bank accounts to withdraw cash from.
  3. Select the bank account you want to withdraw cash from.
  4. To make the payment, enter your UPI PIN.

When the payment is successful, on the ATM, follow the on-screen instructions. Wait for the ATM to dispense your cash.

Transaction limits

Before you initiate a transaction, consider the following limitations:

  • You can withdraw a maximum amount of ₹10,000 INR per transaction.
  • Enter the amount in multiples of ₹100 INR.
  • The number of UPI-ATM transactions you can make depends on your bank’s ATM. If you exceed the allowed number of transactions, the screen shows a prompt message.
  • The daily amount limits for UPI-ATM transactions are part of UPI limits. If you exceed the prescribed UPI limits, Google Pay shows an error message.

Additional information

Can’t find the "UPI cash withdrawal" option on the ATM

If you don’t find the “UPI cash withdrawal” option on the ATM screen, this feature isn’t supported on that ATM yet. You’ll need to use another ATM.

You can also file a request with your bank to update their ATM and support UPI cash withdrawal. To contact your bank, go to digisaathi.info.

"Cash withdrawals via UPI are not yet supported by your bank" error

If you receive an error that says “Cash withdrawals through UPI aren’t supported by your bank,” this means that your bank doesn’t support UPI-ATM cash withdrawal yet. When your bank is ready, Google Pay will notify you.

Instead, you can add a supported bank account . You can also ask your bank to support this feature. To contact your bank, go to digisaathi.info.

Delay in ATM’s cash disbursal

There may be a delay with the ATM’s cash disbursal even if a transaction is successful on Google Pay. The process is usually instant but can take up to 3 minutes. Further instructions are usually displayed on the ATM screen.

Google Pay shows message to add additional UPI IDs

Currently, only select UPI IDs support cardless ATM withdrawals.

To add additional UPI IDs:

  1. On your mobile device, open Google Pay app .
  2. On the home screen, tap your Profile picture and then Set up payment methods.
  3. Select the associated bank account.
  4. On the “Payment method details” screen, tap Manage UPI IDs.
  5. Add your additional UPI IDs.
ATM can’t dispense cash after a successful Google Pay transaction

Reasons why ATM can’t dispense cash:

  • The ATM is out of funds.
  • It doesn’t have appropriate currency denominations.
  • The QR code screen on the ATM timed out.

For all these scenarios, money is refunded to your bank account in 5 business days. UPI and Google Pay can’t view the exact time of reversal from the ATM bank.

To confirm if the refund is complete, check your bank statement for “NFS” in the details or description section.

If you don’t get a refund within 5 business days:

  1. Contact your bank. To get the details of your bank, go to digisaathi.info.
  2. Give the transaction ID on your Google Pay app as your reference number.

Tips:

  • Google Pay doesn’t get to know about this refund from the ATM. Hence, the transaction continues to show up as successful on Google Pay even after successful refund.
  • If you want your money back immediately and you don’t want to wait for 5 business days, file a chargeback with your bank.
Transaction is stuck in “processing” state on Google Pay

If the UPI transaction on Google Pay is stuck in the payment processing for up to 3 minutes, money debited from your bank account is:

  • Refunded to your bank account.
  • Refunded within 5 business days.

Google Pay shares an update on your transaction status as soon as it gets an update from your bank. To confirm if the refund is complete, check your bank statement for “NFS” in the details or description section.

If you don’t get a refund within 5 business days:

  1. Contact your bank. To get the details of your bank, go to digisaathi.info.
  2. Give the transaction ID on your Google Pay app as your reference number.

Tip: If you want your money back immediately and you don’t want to wait for 5 business days, file a chargeback with your bank.

Transaction failed on Google Pay & money was debited from bank account

Money debited from your bank account is refunded in 5 business days. To confirm if the refund is complete, check your bank statement for “NFS” in the details or description section.

If you don’t get a refund within 5 business days:

  1. Contact your bank. To get the details of your bank, go to digisaathi.info.
  2. Give the transaction ID on your Google Pay app as your reference number.
