Merchant fraud protection

To make your experience selling in Google Play Store and Chrome Web Store better, the payments centre gives merchants benefits including help with disputing chargebacks and fraud detection.

Chargeback resolution

We offer basic chargeback protection to all merchants. Google evaluates all chargebacks you receive and, whenever possible, fights them on your behalf. We won't debit your account for the chargeback if we can successfully dispute it.

Automatic fraud detection

To detect fraudulent transaction cues across Google services, we use advanced risk modelling. We cancel fraudulent transactions that we detect. To protect you, we'll also cancel any active orders associated with the same fraudulent credit card. We also actively leverage external, cross-industry resources, like worldwide fraud blacklists.

Customer order reviews

Google provides you with an order confirmation for every order, and we encourage you to review your orders. If you believe that an order is risky, you can cancel or refund it at any time.

To reduce your exposure to risk, when we detect questionable activity related to one of your orders, we mark it with 'Review' or 'Pending' in payment centre and perform fraud detection checks on it. You cannot charge the order during this time.

We typically complete reviews within 4–6 hours. We may need more time to review some higher-risk orders to let Google specialists perform even more extensive fraud detection checks for your protection. We may also contact you directly as a backup precaution.

If we determine that an order is high-risk or doesn't comply with payments centre policies: We'll cancel the order for your protection. You cannot reinstate an order that we cancel.

If our review confirms an order is valid: The order will be charged.

PCI compliance

The payments centre is fully compliant with the requirements of the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (commonly known as "PCI compliance"). Google Payment Corp. is both a Level 1 Merchant and a Service Provider, and therefore undergoes an annual assessment by an external Qualified Security Assessor (QSA). Our Attestation of Compliance is produced by the QSA and reported to the major card brands and our acquiring banks.
