You can use your Phone app to:
- Always record calls from unknown numbers.
- Always record calls from selected contacts.
- Record an individual call.
- You can play back saved recordings and also modify how long to keep recorded calls.
- You can see when call recording is active with the call recording indicator.
Important: Only certain devices and operators support recording calls. This feature isn't available on Pixel. Some laws require all people on the call to consent to being recorded. Before the call begins, call participants are notified that the call is recorded.
To record your phone calls:
- Your device must run Android 9 and up.
- You must have the latest version of the Phone app.
- You must be in a country or region where call recording is supported. Call recording is widely available, but not in all countries or regions. Features vary based on your country or region.
Turn on 'Always record' for unknown numbers
- On your Android device, open the Phone app .
- At the top right, tap More options Settings Call recording.
- Under 'Always record', turn on Numbers not in your contacts.
- Tap Always record.
Turn on 'Always record' for select contacts
- On your Android device, open the Phone app .
- At the top right, tap More options Settings Call recording.
- Under 'Always record', tap Selected numbers.
- Turn on Always record selected numbers.
- At the top right, tap Add .
- Choose a contact.
- Tap Always record.
- (Optional): Repeat these steps for every contact that you want to record.
Start a recording from a call
Important: The first time that you record a call, you’ll be advised that you must comply with local laws related to recording calls. Many jurisdictions require consent by all parties to record the call.
To protect the privacy of all users, when you start recording, both parties are notified with a disclosure that the call is being recorded. When you stop recording, both parties are notified with a disclosure that the call is no longer being recorded.
- Open the Phone app .
- Make or receive a call.
- To record your call, on the ongoing call screen, tap Record
- To stop recording, tap Stop recording .
Bear in mind
Important: When a user deletes a call log, the call recording is also deleted.
You can’t record a call in progress:
- Until the call is answered
- If the call’s on hold
- When you create a conference call
Find a recorded call
To keep your recordings private, they’re stored on your device. Calls aren’t saved or backed up off-device.
To find your recording:
- Open the Phone app .
- Tap Recents .
- Tap on the caller that you recorded.
- If you recorded the most recent call: Go to the player in the 'Recents' screen.
- If you recorded a previous call: Tap History. Then select the recording from the list of calls.
- Tap Play .
- Optional: To share a recorded call, tap Share .
Tip: You can share recorded calls to supported apps, such as email or messaging apps.
Set how long to keep recorded calls
- On your Android device, open the Phone app .
- At the top right, tap More options Settings Call recording.
- Under 'Recordings', tap Delete recordings.
- Set how long you want to keep a recorded call before it’s automatically deleted.
- Tap Confirm.
Delete a recorded call
- Open the Phone app .
- Tap Recents .
- Find the number or contact of the recorded call that you want to delete.
- Tap History.
- In the list of calls, find the recording and swipe left.
