Camera issues and scanning troubles

Camera won’t focus and image is blurry

All the devices after iPhone 14 Pro have a less flexible main camera that cannot focus on very near things the way pre-14 iPhone cameras could and this is why the camera automatically switches to the wide camera in such cases.

In order to improve scanning quality, tap on the screen in order for the camera to focus, or move the device away from the math problem.

Can a camera without auto-focus scan Math problems?

Unfortunately, the scanning process cannot work without a good enough auto-focus camera.

It produces blurry images when shooting at close distances, which makes it difficult for the app to recognize numbers and letters.

On the other hand, devices with auto-focus cameras produce images that are sharp and clear enough for scanning.

If your device doesn’t have a good enough camera, you can use the Math calculator to type in any math problem.

Camera screen stays black

Try the following steps to troubleshoot this:

  • Make sure Photomath is allowed to access your camera (Settings app =>Apps => find Photomath, allow access to camera)
  • Restart your phone - turn off your phone, wait for about 10 seconds, and then turn it on again. This can fix some minor software related issues.
  • Remove any third party camera apps - uninstall any third party camera applications that you have downloaded to your device. The phone might have received an update for its software, and we might not have had the chance to update our app yet.
  • Uninstall other apps - think of the latest apps you have downloaded/updated around the time that this issue started to occur and uninstall them. After uninstalling, open your camera and see if the phone is still displaying a black screen.

Note: Cyanogen and in other ways modified OS's are not implementing the Camera functions properly and Photomath won't work.

Screen overlay detected

This issue happens when other apps are on top of the Android screen. For example Facebook Messenger chat heads or other similar apps that are floating on top of the Android screen.

In that case it is not possible to properly give camera permission to Photomath, so please go to Settings => Apps => find Photomath =>Permissions, then Allow camera permission.
